Solution skill
salesforce merge failed: master record selection error
Complete solution
Fixes Salesforce merge failures on master record selection: the merge needs an explicit surviving record id. Choose the master by data quality rules and pass it explicitly. Use when merges fail naming master selection. Not for HubSpot merges.
TL;DR
Salesforce merge requires you to name the surviving (master) record, and the failure means the choice was ambiguous or invalid. Pick the master with explicit rules (most complete data, oldest, most activity), pass its id as the master, and merge the losers into it. Never let the choice be random.
Error
Merge failed: unable to determine master record. Specify the master record explicitly.Steps
- List the duplicate set with their field completeness and activity counts. Expected: a scored comparison, not a guess.
- Apply master-selection rules: most complete record wins; tie-break by oldest created date. Expected: one deterministic master.
- Call merge with the master id explicit and the loser ids in the merge list. Expected: the merge succeeds with the right survivor.
- Verify the survivor kept the best field values; merges keep master field values on conflict. Expected: no data loss on contested fields.
- For agents, encode the selection rules in code so every merge is reproducible. Expected: audits can replay any merge decision.
When to use
- Merges fail on master record selection.
- An agent merges duplicates and the survivor seems random.
- After a bad merge kept the wrong record.
When not to use
- HubSpot merge (different API and rules).
- "too many child records" (re-parent first, different fix).
Tool compatibility
- Salesforce merge API and UI merge.
- Agent dedupe pipelines.
Variant phrasings
specify the master record
The API wants an explicit survivor id.
merge kept the wrong record
Master selection was arbitrary; encode the rules.
Why it happens
Merge is destructive and asymmetric: the master's values win conflicts. An ambiguous or default choice silently destroys the better record's data.
Edge cases
- Merging more than two records at once needs the master chosen across the whole set, not pairwise.
- Child records re-parent to the master; check the child limit first.
- Merged-away ids are gone; keep a merge log mapping losers to the master.
