## TL;DR
The http-post-form module is unforgiving about its colon-separated string: one unescaped colon in a value, a missing failure marker, or field names copied from the page source instead of the real request makes every attempt malformed. Capture the actual login POST through the proxy, rebuild the hydra string from those exact field names, and mark success or failure with a string only the real response contains.

```text
hydra http-post-form failed: malformed request on authorized login form
```

## Use this when
- hydra reports a malformed request or tests nothing against an authorized login form.
- The form string was assembled by reading the HTML instead of a captured request.

## Not for this skill when
- hydra runs and reports no valid credentials from the approved set. That is a completed negative result.
- The login needs a per-request CSRF value. A static hydra form string cannot do that flow; use a scripted test with permission instead.

## Steps
1. Log in once by hand through the engagement proxy with a known test account and capture the exact POST, including every hidden field. Verify: Verify: the capture lists the real field names and the response difference between success and failure.
2. Pick the failure marker from the failed login response, a string that never appears on success, and note the success case too. Verify: Verify: the marker is present in the failure capture and absent in the success capture.
3. Build the hydra form string from the captured path and fields, escaping any literal colons in values and keeping the placeholder markers for the user and pass fields hydra expects. Verify: Verify: the string parses in a one-user, one-value dry run without a malformed warning.
4. Run that dry run against the authorized form using only the approved test account credentials, and confirm hydra calls the known good pair valid and a known bad pair invalid. Verify: Verify: hydra agrees with the ground truth on both pairs before any larger run.
5. Only then run the approved credential set, at a rate the engagement allows, with lockout warnings coordinated with the client contact. Verify: Verify: the run completes and any lockouts are reported immediately.

## Variant phrasings
### hydra http-post-form syntax colon escaping
The syntax phrasing.
### hydra F= fail marker wrong all passwords valid
The marker phrasing when everything reports valid.
### capture login request burp build hydra string
The workflow phrasing.

Compatibility: Compatibility: THC hydra current releases, http-post-form and https-post-form modules; test accounts and credential lists must come from the engagement agreement.

## Why it happens
Hydra packs the whole form definition into one delimited string, so a colon inside a value, a renamed field, or a cookie requirement silently changes the request shape. Web forms also fail in the opposite direction from intuition: without a reliable failure marker, hydra may treat every response as success, which is worse than the malformed error because it fabricates results.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Never point hydra at real user credentials or an unapproved list; engagements use seeded test accounts or client-supplied sets.
- Account lockout is a real risk on login forms; agree thresholds and monitoring with the client before the run, not after accounts lock.
- If the form needs a fresh token per attempt, stop and use a proxy-driven scripted approach designed for that flow.
