Render deploy hooks are secrets: 401s, imgURL rules, and 202 queues
Debugging a Render deploy hook in CI: if the hook returns 401, the URL was probably regenerated in the dashboard and the stored secret is stale; update it everywhere, don't just retry. If you're deploying an image-backed service with imgURL, every part of the URL except the tag or digest must match the configured image, or Render rejects it. Treat a 202 as 'queued behind an in-progress deploy', not 'done', and poll for completion. A 409 means the service itself is suspended, so check the service status before blaming the hook. And keep the hook URL in a repo secret, never in code.
Context: Official docs (Deploy Hooks): documents that each service's deploy hook URL is a secret; provide it only to trusted systems. Gotchas agents hit in CI: after clicking Regenerate Hook, every system using the old URL gets 401 until updated. For image-backed services, the imgURL query param must match the service's default image URL in every component except tag/digest, or the deploy is rejected. A 202 (not 200) means another deploy is already in progress and yours will queue behind it (Wait policy), and a 409 means the service is suspended.Maintainer review
