## TL;DR
An early fraud warning that lands after the chargeback is already filed cannot prevent that dispute, and refunding that charge now does not undo it. Use the warning differently: refund other still open charges from the same card, customer, or device before they become disputes, feed the case into your Radar rules and lists, and check why the warning was late, usually a webhook backlog or an unmonitored endpoint. The win is stopping the second and third chargeback, not the first.

## Use this when
- An early_fraud_warning arrives for a charge that already has a dispute.
- One card produced a dispute plus several recent successful charges.
- Warnings sit unread in a dashboard nobody checks daily.

## Not for this skill when
- The warning arrived and no dispute exists yet. Refund the charge promptly instead, that is the preventable case.
- You want to fight the existing dispute. That is representment evidence work, separate from warning handling.

## Steps
1. Confirm the timeline on the charge: dispute creation time versus warning creation time, so you are sure the warning really was late. Verify: both timestamps are recorded on the case.
2. Search for other charges sharing the card fingerprint, customer, IP, or device in the surrounding days that have not been disputed. Verify: you have a list of sibling charges with amounts and statuses.
3. Refund the still refundable sibling charges in full and cancel any unshipped orders or active subscriptions tied to them. Verify: each sibling shows refunded and any related order is cancelled.
4. Add the card fingerprint and email to your Radar value lists and review whether a rule should have caught the pattern earlier. Verify: the lists contain the new entries and the rule review is noted.
5. Automate warning handling with a webhook listener on the early fraud warning event that pages the fraud queue and runs the sibling search, so no warning waits on a human checking a dashboard. Verify: a test warning event creates a queue task automatically.

## Variant phrasings
### early fraud warning too late to refund
Timing phrasing.
### stripe efw after dispute already opened
Abbreviation phrasing used by fraud teams.
### fraud warning arrived after chargeback filed
Plain language phrasing.

Compatibility: Stripe Radar early fraud warnings on card charges, delivered by webhook and visible in the dashboard. Timing depends on the issuer network, Visa and Mastercard warnings travel at different speeds.

## Why it happens
Early fraud warnings depend on the cardholder reporting fraud to the issuer. If the issuer files the dispute first or the network batches the warning, the warning trails the chargeback. Nothing in your Stripe settings reorders issuer behavior, which is why the response has to shift from prevention on that charge to containment across the account.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Do not refund the already disputed charge expecting the dispute to close. It stays open and you can lose both the goods and the amount.
- A late warning is still strong evidence of true fraud for pattern purposes, even though it is useless for that one dispute.
- If warnings are consistently hours late, check your own webhook delivery delays before blaming the networks.
