figma API 403 Forbidden: invalid personal access token scope
Fixes Figma API 403 'invalid personal access token scope' errors. Use when a PAT works on some endpoints but is rejected on others because the needed scope was not granted. Not for 401 invalid-token errors, 404 file access problems, or OAuth token flows.
TL;DR
Your Figma personal access token was not granted the scope the endpoint needs. Regenerate the token with the right scopes checked in your Figma account settings, update the client, and the 403 clears. Also confirm the token's account actually has access to the file or team.
The token is valid. Its permissions are too narrow.
Verbatim query
figma API 403 Forbidden: invalid personal access token scopeSteps
Identify the scope the endpoint needs Check the Figma API docs for the failing endpoint and note which scopes it requires. Expected: A named scope or set of scopes for that endpoint.
Regenerate the personal access token with those scopes In Figma account settings, create a new personal access token with the required scopes checked. Expected: A fresh token string with broader grants.
Update the client configuration Replace the old token with the new one wherever the generated client stores it. Expected: The client sends the new token on the next request.
Re-run the failing call Call the same endpoint again and confirm it succeeds. Expected: A 200 response instead of the 403.
Record the required scopes next to the endpoint in the client Note which scopes each Figma endpoint needs so the next token is created correctly the first time. Expected: A scope list in the client docs or config comments.
Use this when
- Figma returns 403 about an invalid personal access token scope.
- The same token works on some endpoints and fails on others.
- A generated client was built against endpoints its token was never granted.
Not for this skill when
- The error is a 401, meaning the token itself is bad or missing.
- The error is a 404 on a file, which is a file-access problem rather than a scope problem.
- The integration uses OAuth tokens rather than personal access tokens.
Variant phrasings
"Invalid token - missing scope"
Same scope-grant problem under slightly different wording. Same fix.
403 on file export or comment endpoints
Export and comment endpoints need their own scopes beyond basic file read. Check the docs per endpoint.
Why it happens
Figma scopes personal access tokens per resource area: file content, comments, webhooks, and so on are separate grants. A token created with only the default scopes works for basic reads and fails the moment the client touches an endpoint outside those grants. Generated clients are usually written against the full API surface while the token is minted with a subset.
Edge cases
- Adding scopes to your account does not update an existing token; you must generate a new one.
- A cached old token in the client or CI config keeps failing after you mint the new one; clear every copy.
- Token scope is separate from file access: the right scope plus no file access still 403s.
- Enterprise SSO setups can impose extra token restrictions beyond scopes.
