## TL;DR
Jupyter saves the full widget state into the notebook file, and chatty widgets (live plots appending points, grids holding full datasets) can inflate that state to 100MB, at which point saving times out or the file becomes unopenable. Strip the saved widget state with the widget-state cleaner or by clearing widget outputs, then re-save. Going forward, keep large data out of widget models: widgets should hold views and parameters, never the dataset itself.

agent's widget state grew to 100MB: notebook save timed out
```
## Use this when
- Saving the notebook hangs or times out, and the file is tens of megabytes.
- The notebook JSON is dominated by a huge `widgets` state block.
- Live-updating widgets (streaming plots, data grids) accumulate state over a long session.
## Not for this skill when
- Saves are slow because of large cell outputs (images, dataframes). That is output bloat, a different fix.
- Widgets do not render. That is an extension or comm problem.
## Steps
1. Confirm widget state is the bulk: check the file size and search the JSON for the size of the `widgets` state section. Expected: widget state accounts for most of the megabytes.
2. Back up the notebook, then strip the saved widget state: clear the widget outputs or use the notebook's widget-state cleaner, and re-save. Expected: the file shrinks to a sane size and saves instantly.
3. Re-run the widget cells to confirm they still work live. Expected: widgets function; only the persisted state snapshot is gone.
4. Find the state hog: look for widgets holding full datasets, ever-growing point lists, or un-throttled update loops. Expected: you can name the widget and the growing trait.
5. Refactor the hog: keep data in kernel variables and pass only the current view (a window, an aggregate, a sample) to the widget. Expected: widget state stays in the kilobytes across a long session.
6. Add a save-time guard for agents: warn or strip when widget state exceeds a threshold before committing the notebook. Expected: no 100MB widget state ever reaches version control again.
## Tool compatibility
ipywidgets 7.x/8.x; notebook 6.x/7.x and JupyterLab 3.x/4.x widget-state persistence.
## Variant phrasings
### notebook save hangs widget state too large
The symptom phrasing. Strip the saved state, then keep datasets out of widget models.
### ipynb file huge because of widgets
The file-size phrasing. The widgets metadata block is the weight; clean it.
### clear widget state jupyter notebook
The how-to phrasing. Clean the state, re-save, and fix the state-hoarding widget.
## Why it happens
Widget state persistence exists so a reopened notebook can show widgets without re-running, which means the entire live model, including every data point ever pushed into it, gets serialized into the file. Widgets designed for interactivity happily accept unbounded data because nothing in the widget protocol says no, and a streaming plot left running for hours will dutifully remember every point. The save then has to serialize and write tens of megabytes of JSON, which times out or produces files that choke every tool downstream. The durable fix is a design rule: widget models are for interaction state, and bulk data lives in the kernel behind an accessor the widget queries.
## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Stripping state removes the reopen-and-see-widgets convenience. For dashboards that need it, persist a small representative state, not the live accumulation.
- Some widgets rebuild state from outputs on load. Clear both the widget state and the stale outputs or the bloat returns on reopen.
- Agents that screenshot or scrape widget state for 'context' can themselves inflate it. Read widget values selectively.
- Version-controlling a notebook with cleaned state still shows a diff on every widget interaction. Consider excluding widget-heavy notebooks from fine-grained diff review.
