veeam "processing finished with errors"
Fixes Veeam processing finished with errors: open the per-object log, fix the named VM or file cause such as VSS, CBT or credentials, then rerun only the failed objects. Use when a Veeam job ends with errors but partly succeeds. Not for jobs that fail before processing starts.
TL;DR
Processing finished with errors is a summary, not a diagnosis. The job processed some objects and failed others for specific reasons listed per VM or per file. Open the job statistics, read each failed object entry, fix the named cause such as a VSS writer, changed block tracking fault, or expired credentials, and retry only the failed objects.
veeam "processing finished with errors"Use this when
- The job result is failed or warning with processing finished with errors.
- Some VMs in the job backed up and others did not.
- The summary count of errors rose after a guest or hypervisor change.
Not for this skill when
- Every object fails at snapshot creation. Treat it as a snapshot creation failure.
- The job never starts because the repository is full or unreachable.
Steps
- Open job statistics and list each failed object with its exact sub-error text. Verify: every failure has a named sub-cause, not just the summary
- Group failures by sub-cause: VSS freeze, snapshot, credentials, CBT reset, or network read. Verify: each group has an owner fix
- Fix the largest group first using its specific remedy, for example restarting a failed VSS writer or resetting CBT on the named VM. Verify: the remedy is applied to the named objects only
- Check the job account still has guest and hypervisor rights after any directory or vCenter permission change. Verify: a manual snapshot and guest processing test succeed
- Retry the job for failed objects and confirm the error count drops to zero or to a known remainder. Verify: the retry result improves and remaining failures are documented
Variant phrasings
veeam processing finished with errors vm
The per-VM phrasing.
veeam job finished with errors details
The log-hunting variant.
veeam some vms failed processing
The partial-success wording.
Compatibility: Veeam Backup and Replication 11 and 12 jobs for VMware, Hyper-V and agent-based workloads with per-object processing statistics.
Why it happens
The summary exists because Veeam processes objects independently so one bad VM does not block the rest. That design hides the real causes one level down in per-object logs. Teams that only read the summary retry blindly and hit the same writer, permission or tracking fault every night.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- A growing error count after patching often means guest tools or writers changed. Compare the first failing night with patch history.
- Warning and error are different outcomes. Warnings such as skipped files still produced a restore point.
- Export the job log before retrying if you need vendor support. Retries overwrite the visible history.
