intercompany account 1400 does not zero out at consolidation: "balance mismatch" error on entity US-01
Fixes intercompany account 1400 not zeroing at consolidation with a balance mismatch on US-01: pair every US-01 intercompany line with its counterparty mirror and clear the unpaired items. Use when one entity drives the mismatch. Not for FX translation differences.
TL;DR
Intercompany 1400 zeroes only when every debit in one entity has an equal, opposite credit in the counterparty entity, in the same period and currency basis. Pull the 1400 detail for US-01 and each counterparty, pair lines by invoice or journal reference, and the mismatch will reduce to a short list: a one-sided posting, a period mismatch, or an amount keyed differently on each side. Clear those items; do not post a consolidation plug.
intercompany account 1400 does not zero out at consolidation: "balance mismatch" error on entity US-01Use this when
- Account 1400 has a residual after consolidation eliminations run.
- The consolidation report names one entity, here US-01, as the mismatch source.
- Counterparties report different intercompany balances for the same relationship.
Not for this skill when
- All entities pair off and the residual is purely currency translation. That belongs in the translation adjustment workflow.
- The mismatch is in a non-intercompany control account. Follow that account's own rec process.
Steps
- Export account 1400 detail for US-01 and every counterparty entity for the period, with journal references and currencies. Verify: both sides of each relationship are in one working file
- Pair lines by reference and amount, then sort what is left unpaired by age and size. Verify: the unpaired total equals the consolidation mismatch exactly
- Classify each unpaired item as one-sided posting, wrong period, wrong amount, or wrong counterparty account. Verify: every unpaired line has a class and an owner entity
- Post the missing mirror entry or period correction in the entity that owns the error, using the original reference. Verify: the pair now nets to zero in the detail file
- Rerun consolidation eliminations and confirm 1400 zeroes for US-01 with no manual plug. Verify: elimination report shows zero residual for the US-01 relationships
Variant phrasings
intercompany out of balance consolidation elimination
The elimination phrasing.
intercompany account does not eliminate to zero
When the residual survives the close.
Compatibility: Multi-entity NetSuite OneWorld, Sage Intacct multi-entity, Dynamics 365 Finance consolidation, and SAP intercompany reconciliation.
Why it happens
Intercompany balances are maintained by two teams, two close calendars, and often two entry habits. One side books on invoice date, the other on receipt; one keys the gross, the other keys net of a discount. Each side is internally correct, so both trial balances balance, but the pair does not mirror and the elimination cannot zero. Pair-level matching finds the asymmetry that account-level totals hide.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- In-transit items are legitimate for a few days: goods shipped, invoice not yet received. Age them separately instead of forcing them to zero.
- A residual that is exactly an FX movement on a foreign-currency intercompany loan is translation, not a break. Route it to revaluation.
- If one entity posts intercompany to 1400 and the other to a payable account, add a mapping rule so the class of break stops recurring.
