Solution skill
azure blob backup "authorization failure"
Complete solution
Fixes Azure Blob backup authorization failure: repair the storage account key, SAS or identity permissions the backup tool uses, and scope rights to the container. Use when backups to Azure Blob fail with authorization failure. Not for S3 credential errors.
TL;DR
Azure Blob authorization failure means the identity the backup tool presented was rejected: an expired SAS, a rotated account key not updated in the tool, or a managed identity missing the blob data role on the container. Identify the auth method in use, test it outside the backup tool, fix the credential or role assignment at the smallest scope, and rerun.
azure blob backup "authorization failure"Use this when
- Backups to Azure Blob stop with authorization failure or 403-style errors.
- The failure began after a key rotation or SAS renewal date.
- The same tool backs up to other targets fine.
Not for this skill when
- The storage account is unreachable from the network. Connectivity first.
- S3 or GCS targets show auth errors. Different clouds, different fixes.
Steps
- Determine which auth the backup job uses: account key, SAS, or managed identity, from the job target settings. Verify: the auth method is identified
- Test that credential against the container with a storage explorer or CLI list operation from the backup server. Verify: the test reproduces or clears the failure
- If a key or SAS is used, regenerate or update it in the backup tool and check its expiry and permissions include write and list. Verify: new credential works in the test
- If an identity is used, confirm the role assignment grants blob data contributor rights on this container or account. Verify: the assignment is visible and propagated
- Rerun the backup job and confirm objects are written to the container. Verify: the job completes and new blobs appear
Variant phrasings
azure blob 403 backup authorization failed
The 403 phrasing.
azure storage backup sas expired authorization
The SAS variant.
azure blob container permission backup tool
The role wording.
Compatibility: Microsoft Azure Blob Storage, storage accounts with key, SAS and Microsoft Entra ID managed identity authentication, used by major backup tools.
Why it happens
Azure separates management plane rights from data plane rights, and backup tools need the data plane. Teams often grant portal-visible roles that do not include blob data actions, or rotate keys for compliance and forget the backup tool copy. SAS tokens add expiry, so authorization failures frequently start on a calendar date, not after a config edit anyone remembers.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Role assignments can take minutes to propagate. A correct assignment tested too early still fails.
- Firewall rules on the storage account can present as authorization errors. Check network restrictions too.
- Scope SAS and roles to the backup container, not the whole subscription, and diarise their expiry.
