Solution skill
agent's pydantic schema rejected a valid debezium envelope, parsing failed
Complete solution
Fixes a pydantic model that rejects valid Debezium change events, covering the envelope structure, nullable before and after images, op codes, and source metadata fields that vary by connector. Use when Debezium events fail validation in a consumer. Not for events that are genuinely malformed at the Kafka record level.
TL;DR
A Debezium envelope is not one rigid shape: the before image is null on creates, the after image is null on deletes, the payload can carry a tombstone as a literal null record, and connectors add source fields per database. A pydantic schema written from a few sample update events will reject valid creates and deletes as soon as they arrive. Loosen the schema where the format is genuinely optional, type the operation field as the real set of codes, and validate against captured examples of every operation type.
agent's pydantic schema rejected a valid debezium envelope, parsing failedUse this when
- Validation errors cluster on create or delete events while updates pass.
- The error points at before or after being missing or null on a real change event.
- A new table or connector starts failing while long running ones pass.
Not for this skill when
- The events fail because the Kafka value is not JSON at all, such as an Avro payload read as JSON. That is a deserialiser mismatch.
- The schema is a business contract downstream deliberately stricter than Debezium. Then the translation layer, not the envelope schema, is where strictness belongs.
Steps
- Capture real examples of each operation type from the topic: create, update, delete, and a snapshot read if the connector sends them, plus a tombstone if compaction is on. Note the exact fields each carries. Verify: the schema work is grounded in the full set of real shapes
- Map the validation failures to the examples: which fields your schema requires that an operation type legitimately omits or sends as null. Note each false requirement. Verify: every rejection is matched to a valid shape it wrongly excludes
- Revise the pydantic model: before and after as optional with null allowed, the op field covering the real codes including snapshot reads, source and transaction blocks as tolerant models that keep unknown fields. Note the fields relaxed and why each is safe. Verify: the schema describes the envelope as Debezium actually sends it
- Handle the null record tombstone before parsing, since no schema validates a record that is not there. Note where tombstones are filtered in the consumer. Verify: the null case is handled by the consumer flow, not the model
- Replay the captured examples of every type through the revised schema plus a deliberately broken record, and confirm all valid ones pass and the broken one still fails. Note the replay results. Verify: the schema is permissive where the format is and strict where it matters
Variant phrasings
debezium envelope before null create pydantic validation error
The null image phrasing.
debezium op codes c u d r schema consumer parsing
The operation codes searched directly.
Compatibility: Debezium connectors for the common databases publishing JSON envelopes to Kafka, consumed from Python with pydantic v1 or v2. Field details vary by connector and by the envelope and converter settings in use.
Why it happens
Change data capture describes transitions, and each transition type has a different shape by necessity: a create has no before, a delete has no after. A schema inferred from samples inherits the sample's blind spots, and sample sets are always dominated by updates because updates dominate real traffic. The failure therefore arrives late and selectively, the first delete of a record the business cares about, which is the worst moment to discover the consumer cannot represent deletes at all. Schemas for envelopes must be written from the format's specification, tested against every operation type.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Schema registry and Avro or Protobuf formats change the tooling but not the shape problem. The same per operation optionality applies.
- Debezium can unwrap the envelope into a flattened record with an SMT. Know whether your topic carries the envelope or the flattened form before modelling either.
- Extra fields will keep arriving as connectors are configured. A model that forbids unknown fields guarantees future breakage; keep extras and log new ones.
- Decimal and timestamp encodings inside the payload vary with connector settings, showing up as numbers, strings, or objects. Type those fields from the connector configuration, not from one sample.
