## TL;DR
Auto-renewal is a chain: a job selects expiring subscriptions, charges or invoices them, and notices go out on failure. Silence means the chain broke without an alert at the break point: selection missed the cohort, the charge failed quietly, or notices were never wired. Walk one lapsed renewal through all three stages.

```text
auto-renewal failed silently: subscription cancelled without warning
```

## Use this when
- Subscriptions ended at term with no renewal invoice or charge
- Customers say they intended to renew and got no warning
- The lapse cohort shares a plan, region, or migration batch

## Not for this skill when
- The contract required manual countersignature and it never happened
- The customer gave notice of non-renewal that was not recorded

## Steps
1. Pick a lapsed subscription and find it in the renewal job's selection logs for its expiry window. Verify: the job either selected it or silently skipped it
2. If selected, trace the charge or invoice attempt and its result. Verify: the payment-stage outcome is known
3. Check every notice the failure should have triggered: internal alert, customer email, CSM task. Verify: which notices exist in code and which actually sent are both recorded
4. Repair the broken stage and wire a failure alert that fires on any selected renewal that does not complete. Verify: the chain now fails loudly, never silently
5. Contact the lapsed cohort with a reinstatement offer that restores original terms for a short window. Verify: affected customers can return without penalty

## Why it happens
Silent failures happen at stage boundaries where success is assumed. Each stage of renewal logs something if you look: selection lists, payment attempts, message sends. A single lapsed account traced through all three converts a vague reliability worry into one broken stage.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Selection often excludes subscriptions with any data blemish (missing tax id, stale address). Log exclusion reasons, not just inclusions.
- Reinstatement windows must also restore usage data and seats, not just billing, or returning customers find an empty account.
- A renewal that charges successfully but fails to extend the term date will lapse next cycle. Verify term extension, not only payment.
