## TL;DR
Deflection breaks as dead ends: the bot loops, the contact button hides behind a solved state, or the help centre's escalation link rots after a redesign. Walk the exact paths a frustrated customer takes, from the top help articles and bot flows, and try to reach a human as they would. Every dead end you hit, they hit.

support deflection broken: customers can't reach a human
```
## Use this when
- Customers complain they cannot reach support, via sales or social channels
- Ticket volume fell while complaints about access rose
- A help-centre or bot redesign shipped recently
## Not for this skill when
- Contact paths work and the complaint volume is a few anecdotes
- Deflection was intentionally tightened and leadership accepts the tradeoff
## Steps
1. From the top 10 help articles, attempt to reach a human using only on-page paths. Verify: each article's escape route works or is named as a dead end
2. Run the support bot through the 10 most common intents and try to escalate from each. Verify: bot flows that loop or refuse escalation are listed
3. Check the contact entry points for logged-out, mobile, and non-English experiences. Verify: access gaps by surface are identified
4. Restore a visible human path at every dead end, with the escalation option shown before the third bot turn. Verify: a test user reaches a human from every tested path
5. Monitor contact-path conversion (help views to human contact) and complaint mentions weekly. Verify: access regressions surface as data, not as viral complaints
Compatibility: Compatibility: help centres and bots (Zendesk Guide, Intercom Fin-style bots, custom chat widgets), current versions.
## Why it happens
Deflection success is usually measured as tickets avoided, which rewards trapping people. The counter-metric is reachability: a determined customer must always be able to reach a human. Path-walking the real flows finds traps that aggregate metrics call success.
## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Trapped customers often churn silently or escalate publicly. Treat access complaints from any channel as high severity.
- Some intents (billing disputes, security reports) should never deflect. Hard-route them to humans by policy.
- Mobile help paths break more often than desktop after redesigns. Always test the mobile flow explicitly.
