## TL;DR
Large attachment fetches time out because a single HTTP request carrying hundreds of megabytes breaks on any network wobble. Fetch in chunks with resume: request byte ranges, retry only the failed chunk, and stream to disk instead of buffering in memory. A chunked fetch turns a timeout from a total failure into a brief pause.

## The query

```text
support agent's attachment fetch timing out on large files: chunked retry
```

## Use this when

- Attachment downloads time out on large files
- Integrations fail fetching big attachments
- You are building attachment pipelines
- Agents cannot open large files from tickets

## Not for

- Upload size limits
- Blocked file types
- Choosing attachment storage
- Attachment preview rendering

## Steps

### 1. Fetch in byte-range chunks

Request the file in fixed-size chunks using range requests. A chunk size in the low megabytes balances overhead against retry cost. The server must support ranges; verify with a test request.

Expected output: chunked fetching working against the attachment host.

### 2. Retry only the failed chunk with backoff

When a chunk fails, retry that chunk with exponential backoff, not the whole file. Resume from the last completed chunk. Whole-file retry on a flaky network never converges.

Expected output: failed chunks retried individually, downloads completing.

### 3. Stream to disk, never buffer in memory

Write each chunk to disk as it arrives. Buffering a large file in memory crashes the worker or the agent's browser tab. Streaming keeps memory flat regardless of file size.

Expected output: constant memory usage during large fetches.

### 4. Verify integrity with checksums

After assembly, verify against the source checksum if available. Chunked assembly can silently corrupt on edge cases; a checksum turns silent corruption into a detected retry.

Expected output: checksum-verified complete files.

### 5. Set expectations in the UI

Show progress for large downloads and set a generous but finite overall timeout. A progress bar with a realistic estimate beats a spinner that times out mysteriously.

Expected output: progress indication and sane timeouts for large files.

## Template: the checklist

```text
Large attachment fetch:
[ ] Byte-range chunked fetching implemented
[ ] Per-chunk retry with backoff, resume from last good chunk
[ ] Streaming to disk, flat memory usage
[ ] Checksum verification after assembly
[ ] Progress UI with realistic timeouts
```

## Variant phrasings

### attachment download times out

Steps 1 and 2. Chunk it, retry the chunk.

### large file fetch fails halfway

Step 2 as the direct fix: resume, not restart.

### downloading big ticket attachments

Full sequence as the implementation pattern.

## Why it happens

Single-request downloads couple the entire transfer to one TCP connection's luck. On real networks, long transfers hit timeouts, NAT expirations, and transient drops. Chunking decouples progress from luck: completed chunks stay completed, and only the unlucky chunk retries.

## Edge cases

- Servers without range support: fall back to whole-file fetch with resume impossible; flag these hosts.
- Authenticated URLs expiring mid-download: refresh the URL or token before starting, and handle expiry per chunk.
- Concurrent chunk fetching: parallel chunks speed things up but multiply server load. Cap concurrency.
- Virus scanning on download: scans can hold the first byte for a long time. Separate scan timeout from transfer timeout.
