## TL;DR
Newer NLTK versions split sentence tokenization into a `punkt_tab` resource, so old code that only downloaded `punkt` now fails with a LookupError. Fix it by running `nltk.download('punkt_tab')` once in the environment, or add it next to your existing `punkt` download.

```text
+"punkt_tab" nltk
```

## Use this when
- NLTK raises LookupError mentioning `punkt_tab` when you call sent_tokenize
- Code that worked on an older NLTK breaks after an upgrade
- An agent set up an NLP pipeline in a fresh container and tokenization fails

## Not for this skill when
- The missing resource is `punkt` itself (download that instead)
- The download fails with SSL or network errors (thats connectivity, not the resource name)
- You need a non-English tokenizer (those are separate resources per language)

## Steps

1. Reproduce and confirm the exact missing resource:

```python
import nltk
nltk.download('punkt_tab')
from nltk.tokenize import sent_tokenize
print(sent_tokenize("Hello world. This is a test."))
```
Expected output: the download completes and the print shows `['Hello world.', 'This is a test.']`. The download only needs to happen once per environment.

2. If you already download `punkt` in setup code, add `punkt_tab` right next to it:

```python
for pkg in ('punkt', 'punkt_tab'):
    nltk.download(pkg, quiet=True)
```
Expected output: both downloads succeed quietly. Do this in your Dockerfile or setup script, not at request time.

3. If the download cant reach the internet (locked-down env), point NLTK at a pre-seeded directory:

```bash
ls /usr/share/nltk_data/tokenizers/
```
Expected output: a `punkt_tab` directory exists there. Copy the resource into the image at build time so runtime never needs network.

4. Pin your NLTK version so upgrades dont surprise you again:

```bash
pip freeze | grep -i nltk
```
Expected output: something like `nltk==3.9.1`. The punkt_tab split landed in the 3.8+ line, so pinning documents which behavior your code expects.

## Variant phrasings

### LookupError: punkt tokenizer not found in nltk_data
Thats the older sibling of this error; download `punkt`. If you are on a new NLTK, download both.

### Resource punkt_tab not found, attempted to load tokenizers/punkt_tab/english/
Same fix. The path in the message tells you exactly which resource name to download.

## Why it happens
NLTK refactored its Punkt sentence tokenizer to load precomputed tables from a `punkt_tab` resource instead of deriving them at runtime from `punkt`. Old setup scripts download only `punkt`, so the new loader finds nothing and raises LookupError. The error message helpfully suggests the download command, which most people miss because they only read the first line.

## Edge cases
- `nltk.download()` writes to the first writable path in `nltk.data.path`; in containers that may be a throwaway dir, so downloads vanish on restart. Bake them into the image.
- Some minimal Docker images lack the CA certs for the NLTK download server; the download then fails with SSL errors that look unrelated.
- If you vendor NLTK resources, keep the directory layout exactly as the downloader creates it; NLTK looks up by relative path.
