Immutable solution version

monday.com API error: Complexity budget exhausted 429

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes monday.com 429 'Complexity budget exhausted' errors from greedy GraphQL queries. Use when a generated client blows the per-minute complexity budget with big nested queries. Not for 429s from other providers, monday.com auth errors, or 400-level complexity errors.

TL;DR

monday.com meters API usage by query complexity, not request count, and your query spent the whole minute's budget. Shrink the query: smaller page sizes, fewer nested fields, and paced sequential requests with waits between them. Read the complexity metadata in the response to see what each query costs.

One greedy query can eat the entire budget. Split it up.

Verbatim query

monday.com API error: Complexity budget exhausted 429

Steps

  1. Read the complexity cost from the response monday.com returns complexity and budget info with the response or the 429. Note the cost of the failing query and when the budget resets. Expected: You know the query's cost and the reset time.

  2. Cut the page size Drop the limit on the failing query, for example from hundreds of items to a few dozen per page. Expected: The per-query complexity number drops.

  3. Remove unneeded nested fields Trim the selection to only the fields the integration actually uses. Deep nesting multiplies cost. Expected: The complexity cost drops further with no lost data.

  4. Pace the requests Send the smaller queries sequentially with a wait between them instead of firing everything in parallel. On a 429, wait for the reset window, then resume. Expected: Queries complete across several budget windows with no 429s.

  5. Monitor complexity per query going forward Log the complexity value returned with each response so the next greedy query gets caught in testing, not production. Expected: A log line per query showing its cost.

Use this when

  • monday.com returns 429 with a complexity budget message.
  • A generated client fetches boards or items with large limits and deep nesting.
  • Parallel paginated requests all fail at once.

Not for this skill when

  • The 429 comes from a different provider with a different metering model.
  • The failure is a monday.com 401 or 403.
  • The complexity error arrives as a 400 rather than a 429 (different handling).

Variant phrasings

"Complexity budget exhausted, reset in X seconds"

The reset timestamp tells you exactly how long to wait. Honor it instead of retrying immediately.

Complexity warnings on heavy mutations

Bulk mutations cost more than they look. The same shrink-and-pace fix applies.

Why it happens

monday.com charges each GraphQL query a complexity cost against a per-minute budget. Request count is irrelevant: one query asking for thousands of nested items can exceed the whole budget by itself. Generated clients built for REST-style pagination assume "one big request is efficient," which is exactly backwards under complexity metering.

Edge cases

  • The budget resets every minute; the reset timestamp in the response is authoritative.
  • Different queries have wildly different costs; two "small-looking" queries can differ 10x.
  • Mutations, especially bulk ones, cost more than reads.
  • Several generated clients sharing one API token share one budget; parallel workers multiply the burn.
  • Retrying a 429 immediately without waiting just burns more budget.
