xero API 400: The TaxType code QUINEX does not exist for this country

Version 1Sign in to save

Complete solution

Fixes Xero API 400 'The TaxType code QUINEX does not exist for this country'. Use when a generated client hardcodes a tax code that is not valid for the organisation's country. Not for other Xero 400s, auth errors, or tax amount mismatches.

TL;DR

QUINEX is not a valid tax type for this Xero organisation's country. Fetch the organisation's actual tax rates, pick the correct TaxType code for the transaction, and resend the invoice. Generated clients must never hardcode tax codes across countries.

Tax codes are country-specific. The sample you copied was from somewhere else.

Verbatim query

xero API 400: The TaxType code QUINEX does not exist for this country

Steps

  1. Fetch the organisation's tax rates Call the Xero tax rates endpoint for the organisation and list every valid TaxType code. Expected: A list of valid codes; QUINEX is not among them.

  2. Identify the correct tax type for the transaction Match the transaction, like a domestic sale or an export, to the right code from the list. Expected: A valid code chosen deliberately, not copied from a sample.

  3. Replace the hardcoded code in the payload Swap QUINEX for the correct code everywhere the generated client sets it. Expected: No occurrence of the invalid code remains in the payload.

  4. Resend the invoice or line item Send the corrected payload. Expected: A 200 response with the invoice created.

  5. Stop hardcoding tax codes in the generated client Look up the tax rate by country or transaction type at runtime, or take it from configuration per organisation. Expected: The client works for any country without code changes.

Use this when

  • Xero returns 400 saying a TaxType code does not exist for the country.
  • A generated client hardcodes tax codes copied from docs samples.
  • The same code works for one organisation and fails for another.

Not for this skill when

  • The 400 is a different Xero validation error.
  • The failure is a Xero 401 or 403.
  • The problem is a tax amount mismatch rather than an unknown code.

Variant phrasings

"The TaxType code X does not exist" for other codes

Any code can hit this. The fix is always: list the organisation's real codes, pick the right one.

Tax rate validation errors on line items

Line-item level tax codes follow the same country rules. Same fix.

Why it happens

Xero tax types are defined per country, and the code sets differ completely between them. Docs samples and Stack Overflow answers show codes from the author's country, and generated clients copy them verbatim into integrations for organisations in other countries. The code was never valid for this organisation.

Edge cases

  • Multi-region setups need per-organisation tax configuration, not one global code.
  • Tax rates can be renamed or deactivated in Xero settings; re-fetch the list rather than trusting a cached one.
  • Demo companies and live companies can have different tax tables; test against the real one.
  • Line-item tax codes and invoice-level defaults follow the same rules but are set in different places.
  • Some transactions are legitimately tax-exempt, which is its own code, not the absence of one.
