# LLM unable to parse a scanned earnings PDF, table extraction failed

## TL;DR
LLMs cannot parse scanned PDFs because there is no text for them to read, only page images. The fix happens before the model ever sees the file: OCR the PDF into a text layer, then extract tables from the OCRed text. Validate the OCR on known figures, because OCR mangles numbers first and the model will happily reason over mangled numbers.

## The error
```text
(extraction failed)
llm unable to parse scanned earnings pdf; table extract failed, model received empty text
```

## When this helps
- an LLM gets empty text from a scanned PDF
- table extraction fails on scanned earnings reports
- building OCR-before-model pipelines
- validating OCR quality

## When it doesn't
- the PDF has real text; skip OCR and extract directly
- OCR quality is poor; find a better scan
- you need the scanned images themselves; text pipelines do not apply

## Works with
python 3.8+ with pymupdf and camelot; ocrmypdf with tesseract.

## Steps
### 1. Confirm the PDF is scanned before involving the model
```python
import fitz
doc = fitz.open("earnings.pdf")
print("page 1 chars:", len(doc[0].get_text().strip()))
print("page 1 images:", len(doc[0].get_images()))
print("empty text plus images means scanned; the model is not the problem")
```
Expected: A definitive diagnosis. Do not send scanned pages to the model and hope.

### 2. OCR the PDF into a text layer
```bash
ocrmypdf --force-ocr earnings.pdf earnings_ocr.pdf
python3 -c "import fitz; d=fitz.open('earnings_ocr.pdf'); print('chars now:', len(d[0].get_text()))"
```
Expected: An OCRed PDF. The model now receives real text.

### 3. Extract tables from the OCRed text, not with the model
```python
import camelot
tables = camelot.read_pdf("earnings_ocr.pdf", pages="3", flavor="stream")
print("tables:", tables.n)
print(tables[0].df.head(3).to_string() if tables.n else "no tables")
```
Expected: Extracted tables. Deterministic extractors beat model vision on financial tables.

### 4. Validate OCR numbers before the model reasons over them
```python
print("spot-check a known figure from the report against the OCR text")
print("example: find the reported revenue string in the OCR output and compare")
print("mangled numbers invalidate everything downstream")
```
Expected: A validation habit. OCR errors in numbers are silent and catastrophic.

## Other ways people phrase this
### llm cannot parse scanned pdf
OCR first. The model reads text, not images.

### scanned earnings pdf table extract failed
Extract from the OCR layer with deterministic tools.

### model empty text pdf
Diagnose the PDF before blaming the model.

## Why it happens
Scanned PDFs contain images, and text models cannot read images. Sending the raw PDF to the model yields empty or garbage input, which the model then confidently misreads. OCR creates the text layer the model needs, and deterministic table extraction handles the structure better than model vision.

## Edge cases
- OCR confuses 0/O and 1/l; financial tables need the most validation.
- Some pages mix text and scans; OCR only the image pages.
- Model vision on page images is improving but still unreliable for dense tables.
- Keep the OCR text as the system of record; the model reasons over it.
