Solution skill

salesforce flow failed on null owner id

Version 1Sign in to save

Complete solution

Fixes Salesforce flows failing on null OwnerId: the flow assumes every record has an owner. Add null checks and a default owner fallback. Use when flow fault emails cite null owner. Not for assignment-rule issues.

TL;DR

The flow reads OwnerId (or Owner.Name) on a record where it is null and faults. Guard every owner reference with a null check and route null-owner records to a default owner or a review queue. Flows must handle the records the UI never shows you.

Error

Flow fault: An unhandled fault has occurred. Fault reason: Attempt to de-reference a null object (OwnerId).

Steps

  1. Open the fault email or debug log to find the failing element. Expected: the element that dereferenced the owner.
  2. Add a decision before it: if OwnerId is null, skip the owner-dependent logic. Expected: null-owner records take a safe path.
  3. For records that need an owner, assign a default (a queue or the integration user) in the null branch. Expected: no record proceeds ownerless.
  4. Find why the owner is null: API inserts without owner, or ownership cleared by an integration. Expected: you fix the source too, not just the flow.
  5. Re-run the flow on the failed records. Expected: clean runs with no faults.

When to use

  • Flow fault emails mention null owner or null de-reference on owner fields.
  • An agent creates records without setting OwnerId.
  • After an integration change, flows start faulting.

When not to use

  • Lead assignment rules not firing (different engine).
  • OwnerId present but user inactive (different error).

Tool compatibility

  • Salesforce record-triggered and scheduled flows.
  • Fault emails and flow debug logs.

Variant phrasings

unhandled fault on owner

Same null dereference; guard the reference.

flow failed: null object on Owner.Name

Crossing the relationship to a null owner; check OwnerId first.

Why it happens

Flows are usually built against UI-created records, which always have owners. API-created records can skip OwnerId, and the flow meets a null it was never designed for.

Edge cases

  • Queues as owners: OwnerId can point at a queue, and Owner.Name behaves differently; handle both.
  • Scheduled flows process records in bulk; one null-owner record faults the batch unless handled.
  • Default owners need the right permissions or the assignment itself fails.
