## TL;DR
VirusTotal analysis is asynchronous at heart: a fresh file may need upload, queueing and engine time measured in minutes to hours, while your agent waits synchronously and dies on a timeout. Restructure the step: submit, record the analysis reference, continue other triage, and poll for completion in later passes. Decide the message disposition on the evidence you have, because a pending third-party verdict should not hold a campaign hostage.

```text
agent timed out waiting for VirusTotal to return the file verdict
```

## Use this when
- Agent runs fail at the VirusTotal step on new campaign files.
- The same file shows a completed VirusTotal verdict when checked manually later.

## Not for this skill when
- The file hash is well known with a firm verdict. Use it directly; no polling design is needed.
- The API key is invalid, so requests fail instantly. That is a credential fix, not a timeout design.

## Steps
1. Switch the agent from wait-for-verdict calls to a submit and record pattern using the analysis identifier. Verify: submission returns immediately with a reference stored per file.
2. Add a poller that checks pending analyses on a schedule with a maximum age, after which the file is marked verdict-unavailable. Verify: pending items age out explicitly instead of hanging.
3. Set the interim disposition rule for awaiting-verdict files based on other signals: detonation, sender and campaign context. Verify: triage completes without the VirusTotal result when it is late.
4. When a late verdict arrives malicious, trigger the retroactive action: purge and alert as if it had arrived on time. Verify: the late-verdict path is wired to the same actions.
5. Run the agent over a fresh campaign sample set. Verify: the run completes on time and pending verdicts resolve or expire cleanly.

## Variant phrasings
### virustotal verdict timeout agent async polling
The async polling variant.
### agent waits for file reputation triage stall fix
The stall fix variant.

Compatibility: VirusTotal API analysis workflow, agent asynchronous task patterns.

## Why it happens
Reputation services know the past. A campaign file created this morning has no past, so its verdict literally does not exist yet when the agent asks. Synchronous design mistakes that delay for ignorance.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Free and premium API tiers differ sharply in queue priority. Know which your key uses before setting poll expectations.
- Hash-only lookups are instant; reserve uploads for genuinely new files to save quota and time.
- Keep the analysis reference forever in the case record; late verdicts are common evidence in retrospectives.
