Solution skill

agent stored a payment method id in plaintext logs: PCI scope violation

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes an agent storing payment method ids in plaintext logs, a PCI scope violation. Covers purging exposed logs, logging-layer redaction, and CI checks. Not for data already in a compliant vault.

TL;DR

Payment method ids in plaintext logs expand PCI scope to every system that touches those logs: cardholder data must never sit in log files. Purge the exposed logs, add redaction for payment method ids and PANs at the logging layer, and verify with a log scan. Treat log redaction as a security control, not a cleanup task.

agent stored a payment method id in plaintext logs: PCI scope violation

Use this when

  • An agent logged payment method ids in plaintext
  • Logs contain cardholder data
  • You need log redaction for PCI scope

Not for this skill when

  • Only tokens that are explicitly non-sensitive were logged
  • The data is in a PCI-compliant vault rather than logs
  • You are debugging a payment failure (use redacted logs)

Steps

  1. Confirm what was logged: payment method ids, and whether any PANs or CVVs were also captured. Expected: The exposure is scoped.

  2. Purge or securely rotate the affected log files and any copies (backups, aggregators). Expected: The exposed data is contained.

  3. Add redaction at the logging layer: mask payment method ids, PANs, and CVVs before they are written. Expected: Future logs are clean by construction.

  4. Scan historical logs for the redacted patterns to confirm nothing remains. Expected: The cleanup is verified.

  5. Restrict access to log systems that ever held the data, and document the incident. Expected: Access and records are handled.

  6. Add a CI check that fails on cardholder-data patterns in log output. Expected: Regressions are blocked automatically.

Tool compatibility

Application logging pipelines; PCI DSS log protection requirements; Stripe payment method ids.

Variant phrasings

The violation phrased directly.

redact cardholder data logs

The fix as an action.

agent logged PAN PCI scope

The worst-case phrasing.

Why it happens

Under PCI DSS, any system that stores, processes, or transmits cardholder data falls in scope for the full set of controls: a plaintext log line with a payment method id drags the logging pipeline, its backups, and its aggregators into scope. Agents are prolific loggers, and a debug line that dumps a payment object can silently expand scope across the infrastructure. Redaction at the logging layer is the durable fix because it protects against every future debug line, not just the one that caused the incident. This is a prevention control with compliance consequences, so it also warrants an incident record.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Payment method ids are sensitive even though they are not PANs: treat all cardholder-adjacent identifiers as in-scope.
  • Log aggregators and error trackers are separate systems; redact before data leaves the application.
  • Truncated or masked values (last four digits) have specific PCI rules; follow them rather than inventing formats.
