# ImportError: cannot import name 'AES' from 'Crypto.Cipher'

TL;DR: your Crypto install is broken or stale, not missing. Uninstall every crypto-named distribution (`crypto`, `pycrypto`, `pycryptodome`), delete any leftover Crypto folders, then `pip install pycryptodome` fresh. The import works after a clean reinstall.

```text
ImportError: cannot import name 'AES' from 'Crypto.Cipher'
```

## The fix

1. Remove all competing distributions:
```
pip uninstall -y crypto pycrypto pycryptodome pycryptodomex
```

2. Check for leftover directories shadowing the reinstall:
```
python -c "import Crypto; print(Crypto.__file__)"
```
If this still prints a path after uninstalling, delete that Crypto folder by hand.

3. Reinstall cleanly:
```
pip install pycryptodome
```

4. Verify:
```
python -c "from Crypto.Cipher import AES; print('ok')"
```
Expected output: ok.

## When this applies
- `import Crypto` works but `from Crypto.Cipher import AES` fails.
- The traceback points at a Crypto/Cipher/__init__.py inside site-packages.
- You previously had pycrypto, crypto, or a partial install in the same environment.

## When it does NOT apply
- The error is `No module named 'Crypto'`, which means nothing is installed.
- The error names ChaCha20_Poly1305 on an old pycryptodome, which is a version problem.

## Why this happens
pycryptodome ships compiled native modules per cipher. If the Crypto directory is a stale mix of files from pycrypto and pycryptodome installs (or a namespace package missing __init__.py), the package imports but the Cipher submodule cannot find its names. pip thinks the requirement is satisfied so it never repairs the directory. Only a full uninstall plus manual cleanup guarantees a coherent install.

## Compatibility
All pycryptodome 3.x versions. The old `crypto` and `pycrypto` distributions on PyPI are abandoned and should never be installed alongside pycryptodome.
