## TL;DR
ISO 8583 field 4, amount transaction, is a fixed 12 digit numeric string in the currency minor units, with implied decimals from the currency in field 49, so 000000012345 in a USD message is 123.45 dollars, not twelve thousand dollars. Agents fail by reading it as a float, dropping leading zeros incorrectly, or ignoring the currency exponent, which is zero for yen and three for some dinar currencies. Parse field 4 as an integer of minor units, convert using the ISO 4217 exponent for the field 49 currency, and sanity check the result against the message amounts your processor actually settles.

```text
fraud agent couldn't extract transaction amount from iso8583 field 4
```

## Use this when
- An agent errors on raw 8583 logs or extracts amounts off by factors of 100 or 1000.
- Authorization messages come from a legacy switch, acquirer file, or terminal estate.
- Amounts in agent reports do not match settlement reports for the same transactions.

## Not for this skill when
- The data is a modern JSON or ISO 20022 feed. Use its named amount and currency fields directly.
- The field failing is a different data element, for example field 38 approval code. Parse failures there need element specific handling.

## Steps
1. Take one message the agent failed on and isolate the raw field 4 string and the field 49 currency code exactly as transmitted. Verify: you have the literal 12 characters and the currency to interpret them with.
2. Confirm the message bitmap and field layout with the variant spec your source uses, acquirer and network variants differ in later fields, so the field boundaries are proven, not assumed. Verify: field 4 boundaries in the message match the spec offsets.
3. Implement the parse as integer minor units, then apply the ISO 4217 exponent for the currency: divide by 100 for most, by 1 for zero exponent currencies, by 1000 for three exponent currencies. Verify: the sample message amount equals the settled amount for that transaction.
4. Add validation: reject amounts that are zero when the message type implies a purchase, flag any amount that disagrees with a duplicate field where the variant carries one, and log the raw field with every parsed value. Verify: a staged misaligned message fails validation loudly instead of producing a wrong amount.
5. Run the parser over a day of historical messages and reconcile totals against settlement, per currency. Verify: parsed totals match settlement totals per currency to the minor unit.

## Variant phrasings
### iso 8583 field 4 amount parsing
Field specific phrasing.
### agent misread transaction amount factor 100
Factor error phrasing.
### 8583 amount minor units currency exponent
Units phrasing.

Compatibility: ISO 8583 variants from 1987, 1993, and 2003 and acquirer specific dialects. Field 4 semantics are stable across variants; surrounding fields are not, so always confirm the dialect spec.

## Why it happens
Large language and rules based agents alike meet 8583 as raw text, and raw text invites float thinking. The format predates JSON by decades: fixed lengths, implied decimals, and meaning split across fields 4 and 49. Without the spec in the loop, an agent produces confident, wrong amounts, and a factor of 100 error in a fraud context inverts every threshold decision downstream.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Field 54 can carry additional amounts such as cashback, which change what field 4 alone means for a total. Read the processing code in field 3 to know what the transaction actually is.
- Reversals and advices repeat amounts with different meaning. Key the parse to the message type indicator, not just the field.
- Never store the parsed float as the record. Store integer minor units plus currency, and format only for display.
