Solution skill
screening agent never read the cover letters - the attachment field was in the payload but unmapped
Complete solution
Fixes screening agents ignoring cover letters by mapping the attachment field into the prompt. Use when cover letters exist but never influence scores. Key trigger: cover letters present, never cited.
screening agent never read the cover letters - the attachment field was in the payload but unmapped
TL;DR
The cover letter rode along in the ATS payload in a field the agent's mapping never read, so it screened resumes only. Map the field, include the letter in the prompt, and verify with a test: a strong letter should move the score. Unread inputs are the same as missing inputs.
screening agent never read cover letters - attachment field unmapped in payloadSteps
Inspect the payload mapping: confirm the cover-letter field exists in the ATS payload and is absent from the agent's input. Expected: The field is present but unmapped.
Map the field into the screening prompt with explicit instructions to weigh it. Expected: The letter reaches the scorer.
Test with paired resumes: same resume with and without a strong letter should score differently. Expected: The letter moves the needle.
Re-screen recent candidates whose letters were ignored, where the letter could matter. Expected: Missed signals are recovered.
Add a payload-coverage check: every document field in the ATS payload must map somewhere or be explicitly excluded. Expected: No field goes silently unread.
When to use
- cover letters exist but never affect scores
- the ATS payload has unmapped fields
- screening inputs look incomplete
When not to use
- the role does not consider cover letters (then exclusion is correct; document it)
- letters are mapped but weak (that is a weighting question)
- the letters are in a separate system (integrate it or note the gap)
Tool compatibility
- any screening agent
- ATS application payloads
Variant phrasings
- "screening ignored cover letters"
- "attachment field unmapped"
- "cover letter never read agent"
Why it happens
ATS payloads carry more fields than any integration maps on day one, and cover letters are the usual casualty. The agent screened half the application while everyone assumed it saw the whole thing. Payload coverage is a checklist item, not an assumption.
Edge cases
- cover letters can contain PII the resume does not; handle them under the same retention rules
- the weighting of letters vs resume should be explicit and role-dependent
- some candidates game letters with prompt-injection-ish flattery; the rubric should be robust to it
