# discord webhook invalid token deleted channel error

## TL;DR
Deleting a Discord channel deletes its webhooks, and deleting a webhook invalidates the token embedded in its URL. Check the channel still exists, open its integrations settings, create a new webhook, and replace the stored URL everywhere. Send a test message to confirm delivery.

```text
discord webhook invalid token deleted channel error
```

## Use this when

- Discord webhook posts return 401 or 404 webhook errors
- Notifications stopped after channel cleanup in the server
- The webhook URL worked yesterday and nothing in the code changed

## Not for this skill when

- Discord bot token authentication failures (different credential)
- Rate limited webhook posts (429 with retry_after)
- Embed formatting errors on otherwise delivered messages

## Steps

### Step 1: Verify the channel

Open the Discord server and confirm the target channel still exists. Expected: you know whether it was deleted or renamed.

### Step 2: Check the webhook list

In the channel settings under Integrations, Webhooks, look for the webhook. Expected: you confirm it is missing or deleted.

### Step 3: Create a fresh webhook

Create a new webhook in the channel and copy its URL. Expected: a new URL with a valid token.

### Step 4: Update the stored URL

Replace the old webhook URL in your app config and secret store. Expected: no copy of the dead URL remains in any environment.

### Step 5: Send a test message

Post a test payload to the new URL. Expected: the message appears in the channel.

## Tool compatibility

Discord channel webhooks; Discord server integration settings; notification services posting to Discord.

## Why it happens

A Discord webhook URL contains its own credential: the webhook ID plus a token, right in the path. That makes rotation simple but deletion final; there is no undelete, and the channel deletion that usually causes this wipes every webhook in the channel at once. Because the URL looks like an opaque string teams paste once and forget, the failure presents as a mysterious auth error in a system nobody changed. The fix is always a new webhook, never repairing the old one, which is why the stored URL must live somewhere easy to update.

## Edge cases / pitfalls

- Anyone with the webhook URL can post to the channel; treat leaked URLs as compromised and rotate them.
- Server transfers and channel cloning do not carry webhooks over; recreate them after any restructure.
- Discord may rate limit or disable webhooks that look abused; sudden 401s on a working URL are worth a look in the audit log.
