Solution skill
Cohesity restore failed "failed to register VM with the hypervisor" error
Complete solution
Registration is where the restored VM meets the hypervisor's rules: check the target host or cluster, datastore space and permissions, and name collisions with an existing VM of the same name. Use when a Cohesity recovery restoring a VM to its hypervisor. Not for a restore whose data copy itself failed earlier, where the fix is the copy job rather than the target registration.
TL;DR
Registration is where the restored VM meets the hypervisor's rules: check the target host or cluster, datastore space and permissions, and name collisions with an existing VM of the same name. The restore data copied fine in most of these failures; the hypervisor rejected the final registration step, so fix the target side, a duplicate name, an inaccessible datastore, or missing inventory permissions, and re-run only the registration or recovery step.
Cohesity restore failed "failed to register VM with the hypervisor" errorUse this when
- The job or restore fails with this symptom: Cohesity restore failed with failed to register VM with the hypervisor.
- You are working on a Cohesity recovery restoring a VM to its hypervisor and the failure repeats on the same target or schedule.
- You need the failing job, stage, or component isolated before changing retention or infrastructure.
Not for this skill when
- A restore whose data copy itself failed earlier, where the fix is the copy job rather than the target registration.
- The error text names a different product, stage, or root cause. Match the verbatim error first and use that skill.
Steps
- Read the recovery task's detail for the hypervisor's own error returned at registration. Verify: the hypervisor-level rejection is known
- Check the target inventory: a VM with the same name, the datastore's free space, and the account's registration permissions. Verify: the blocking target condition is identified
- Resolve it by renaming the restore target, choosing another datastore or host, or granting the inventory right. Verify: the target accepts new registrations
- Re-run the recovery and confirm the VM appears in inventory and powers on. Verify: the restored VM registers and boots
Variant phrasings
cohesity restore failed to register vm with hypervisor
The verbatim phrasing.
cohesity recovery register vm failed duplicate name datastore
The target-side phrasing.
cohesity vm restore registration error hypervisor fix
The fix phrasing.
Compatibility: Cohesity restore of VMs to VMware or Hyper-V hypervisors
Why it happens
Restore is two operations wearing one name: moving the data back, and asking the hypervisor to adopt the result as a VM. The second has its own failure modes, naming, placement, and permissions, that have nothing to do with backup quality, and the error arrives only after the expensive first part succeeded.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Restoring over the original VM's name requires the original to be powered off or removed; decide that explicitly, never by default.
- Resource pool and folder placement can reject a registration that datastore checks pass; read the full hypervisor error.
