Okta sourced provisioning profile mapping error: attribute not found how to fix
Fixes an Okta sourced provisioning profile mapping error where an attribute is not found by repairing the source profile schema. Use when imports fail naming a missing attribute. Not for target app attribute errors.
TL;DR
Repair the mapping at the profile layer where the attribute is missing. Open the source app profile and the Okta universal profile side by side, find whether the attribute was renamed, removed, or never added to the source schema, restore or remap it, then re-import one user to prove the profile populates before resuming the feed.
Okta sourced provisioning profile mapping error: attribute not foundUse this when
- Okta import or profile push errors name an attribute that cannot be found on the source or universal profile.
- The failure began after a profile cleanup, HR schema change, or app reconfiguration.
- Users whose records avoid the missing attribute import cleanly.
Not for this skill when
- The missing attribute belongs to a target app profile only. Fix that app mapping instead.
- Imports fail at connection level for all attributes. Repair the source connection first.
Steps
- Open Directory, People and the System Log import results for the affected hire and capture the full error detail, the operation that failed, and the identifiers involved, rather than working from the summary banner alone. Keep one hire as the test case for every change so cause and effect stay clear. Verify: the full error detail and one test hire are recorded
- In Okta Profile Editor, open the source app profile, the universal profile, and the mapping between them, and locate the named attribute in each layer. Note whether it exists with a different name, was set as external or hidden, or is absent entirely, because each state has a different repair. Verify: the attribute state in each profile layer is documented
- Restore the attribute on the correct layer: add it back to the source profile with the same name and type the mapping expects, or update the mapping to the renamed attribute if the rename was intentional, confirming the source system actually sends a value for it on import. Verify: the mapping saves and previews a value for a sample user
- Apply the correction in Okta and save it, then re-run provisioning for the single test hire only and read the fresh log entry end to end. If it still fails, treat the new detail as the current cause and do not stack further changes on top. Verify: the test hire provisions successfully or a new specific detail replaces the old one
- Check a sample of source records for empty values on the restored attribute, since a present-but-empty attribute fails later steps differently. Coordinate with the HR owner if a whole worker class lacks the value. Verify: the target hire downstream checks pass in their own systems
- Add the attribute to the profile change checklist so renames or removals in the source schema trigger a mapping review in the same change window, and document the canonical attribute list for sourced provisioning. Verify: the checklist and canonical list are stored with the integration notes
Why it happens
The Okta universal profile is the contract between a sourced app and every downstream mapping. When a source attribute is renamed or removed, every mapping referencing it reports attribute not found, even though user records themselves are intact. The error names the symptom at the mapping layer, not the schema change that caused it, which is why it often appears days after the real change. Restoring schema and mapping agreement at the profile layer fixes all dependent pushes at once, while patching individual user records cannot.
Variants and edge cases
Attribute exists but mapping still fails
Check the attribute data type and namespace: a type change from string to array or a moved custom namespace breaks mappings that look correct by name alone.
Only one sourced app is affected
Each source has its own app profile. Apply the same schema comparison to that app profile rather than assuming the universal profile is at fault.
Attribute intentionally retired
If the business retired the field, remove the mapping and any downstream rules using it in the same change, then confirm no app push still references it.
Compatibility: Applies to Okta profile sourcing from HR apps and directories with Profile Editor mappings. Requires Okta admin rights.
