how to fix orphan record error failed foreign key check on orders table

Version 1

Complete solution

Orphan records mean child rows point at parents that do not exist in the checked table: list the orphan keys, determine whether the parents are missing, late, or in a different table or partition than the check assumes, and fix the load order or the reference. Use when an orders table failing a foreign key check against its parent table. Not for duplicate parent keys, which break joins differently and need.

TL;DR

Orphan records mean child rows point at parents that do not exist in the checked table: list the orphan keys, determine whether the parents are missing, late, or in a different table or partition than the check assumes, and fix the load order or the reference. Deleting orphans without that answer can erase legitimate orders whose customers loaded late.

Use this when

  • The check or run fails with this symptom: child rows in orders have keys with no matching parent row.
  • You are working on an orders table failing a foreign key check against its parent table and the failure repeats on the same data or configuration.
  • You need the failing rows, rule, or stage isolated before changing thresholds or code.

Not for this skill when

  • Duplicate parent keys, which break joins differently and need deduplication first instead.
  • The error text names a different tool, stage, or root cause. Match the verbatim error first and use that skill.

Steps

  1. Run the referential check SQL and list the distinct orphan keys with counts and sample child rows. Verify: the orphan keys and counts are listed
  2. Look up the orphan keys in the source systems and in parent-table history to see whether the parents exist anywhere. Verify: each sampled key is classified as missing, late, or misplaced
  3. Check load ordering and filters: whether the parent load filters out the missing keys or runs after the child load. Verify: the ordering or filter cause is confirmed or ruled out
  4. Fix the cause: correct the parent filter, resequence the loads, or backfill the missing parents from source; quarantine true orphans with reasons. Verify: parents and children are reconciled
  5. Rerun the referential check and confirm zero orphans, or only documented quarantined keys remain. Verify: the check passes with the quarantine accounted for

Variant phrasings

orphan records foreign key check orders table

The verbatim orphan phrasing.

referential integrity failed child rows without parent

The child-without-parent phrasing.

dbt relationships test failed missing parent keys

The dbt relationships-test phrasing.

Compatibility: dbt relationship tests, Soda referential checks, and warehouse foreign key validation

Why it happens

Referential checks assume both tables are complete and current. Late parent loads, parent filters that drop inactive records children still reference, and keys transformed differently on each side all manufacture orphans even when the business data is consistent at the source.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Key formatting differences, such as leading zeros or case, create false orphans. Compare keys after the same normalisation on both sides.
  • Snapshot parent tables at check time. A parent loaded mid-check can look missing.
