Divvy: receipt upload failed - file type not supported
Fixes Divvy's receipt upload rejection by converting the file to a supported format and re-uploading. Use when Divvy rejects a receipt upload for an unsupported file type. Not for oversized files or corrupted images.
TL;DR
Divvy accepts common image and PDF formats and rejects anything else (TIFF scans, HEIC from some phones, Word docs, ZIPs). Convert the receipt to PDF or JPEG and upload again. Check the file extension first; the fix is a format conversion, not a re-scan.
Error
Divvy: receipt upload failed - file type not supportedSteps
- Check the rejected file's extension and format. Expected: you see a non-supported type like TIFF, HEIC, DOCX, or ZIP.
- Convert the file to PDF or JPEG: open it and print or export to PDF, or re-save the image as JPEG. Expected: the new file has a .pdf or .jpg extension.
- Upload the converted file to the transaction in Divvy. Expected: the upload succeeds and the receipt attaches.
- Confirm the attached receipt is legible in the Divvy preview. Expected: merchant, date, and total are readable.
- If conversions keep failing, photograph the receipt with the Divvy mobile app directly. Expected: the app captures in a supported format natively.
When to use
- Divvy rejects a receipt upload with "file type not supported".
- A scanner produces TIFF files that Divvy will not accept.
- Email-forwarded receipts arrive as unsupported attachments.
When not to use
- The upload fails because the file is too large (a size limit, not a type limit).
- The file is corrupted and will not open anywhere.
- The receipt uploads but OCR misreads it.
Tool compatibility
Divvy (Bill Spend and Expense) web and mobile apps (current 2026 releases).
Variant phrasings
divvy "unsupported file format" on receipt upload
Same rejection in alternate wording. Convert to PDF or JPEG.
heic receipt rejected by divvy
iPhone HEIC photos from some iOS versions are rejected. Convert to JPEG or change the camera format setting.
tiff scan rejected in divvy
Flatbed scanners default to TIFF. Export the scan as PDF before uploading.
Why it happens
Divvy's receipt pipeline is built around PDF and JPEG processing: OCR, thumbnailing, and archival all assume those formats. TIFF, HEIC, and document formats fall outside the pipeline, so the upload validator rejects them before they reach OCR. Converting at the source is reliable because PDF and JPEG are the formats the downstream steps were designed for.
