## TL;DR

Post at least 3 clean, link-free replies in a venue before your first reply containing a link. On strict or heavily moderated forums, make it 5. The count only works if every one of those replies is genuinely helpful, three throwaway "thanks, great post" comments buy you nothing.

```text
how many link-free replies before posting a link in a forum
```

## Use this when

- Planning the participation sequence for a new forum account
- Deciding whether an account is ready for its first linked reply
- A venue has no written rule and you need a safe default

## Not for this skill when

- The account already has weeks of history (the threshold is met)
- The venue explicitly states its own number (follow theirs)
- You are counting low-effort replies to hit a quota

## Steps

1. Set the threshold for the venue. Default to 3. Raise it to 5 if the forum shows heavy moderation, recent spam waves, or strict written rules. Expected: a number written in your venue notes before you start.

```
venue: [forum name]
link_free_threshold: 3
raised_to_5_reason: [empty unless strict]
```

2. Define what counts as a clean reply. It must answer a question or add real information, be at least two sentences, contain zero links, and read like a person wrote it. Expected: you can audit any reply against this in seconds.

3. Write and log each reply. After posting, record the thread URL, date, and a one-line summary in your venue tracker. Expected: a running count you can check any time.

```
link-free log:
  1. 2026-10-01 [thread topic] - explained the config option
  2. 2026-10-04 [thread topic] - shared a workaround
  3. 2026-10-07 [thread topic] - answered the setup question
```

4. Confirm none were flagged or removed. Check your post history for moderator edits or deletions before counting them. Expected: all counted replies are still live.

5. Post the first linked reply only after the threshold is met. One link, directly relevant, with real context around it. Expected: the reply survives and the account stays in good standing.

## Variant phrasings

### link-free reply minimum before first link

Three is the floor, five on strict venues. Every counted reply must be genuinely helpful and still live.

### how many good replies before linking on a forum

Count helpful answers, not posts. Three solid answers is the default; check your post history for flags before you link.

### first link threshold for new forum accounts

Set it per venue, log each reply, verify none were removed, then post one relevant link with context.

## Why it happens

Link-to-post ratio is one of the cheapest spam signals a forum can compute, and new accounts start with zero trust. Three clean replies moves the ratio from "every post has a link" to "established participant sharing one resource." Moderators also pattern-match manually: an account with visible helpful history gets the benefit of the doubt.

## Edge cases / pitfalls

- Replies in off-topic or games threads usually do not count toward trust on Discourse; post in real discussion areas.
- Deleted replies do not count, even if you wrote them in good faith.
- Some venues count profile website links too; leave the website field empty until warmed.
- If the threshold reply gets no engagement, that is fine; visibility is not the metric, survival is.
