Immutable solution version

veeam "unable to retrieve next block"

Version 1

Complete solution

Fixes Veeam unable to retrieve next block errors: repair the damaged chain link or repository read path so restores and backups can read every block in sequence. Use when Veeam stops reading a backup file mid-chain. Not for checksum mismatch on a single restored file.

TL;DR

Unable to retrieve next block means Veeam was reading a backup chain sequentially and a block it expected was missing, unreadable, or pointed at the wrong offset. The chain or the file is damaged, or the repository dropped the read. Run a health check, test repository reads, restore from a neighbouring point, and rebuild with an active full.

veeam "unable to retrieve next block"

Use this when

  • A restore, backup or synthetic operation stops with unable to retrieve next block.
  • The error names a specific VBK or VIB file and an offset.
  • The same chain works for newer points but fails at an older link.

Not for this skill when

  • Checksum mismatch is reported with a named restored file. Start with storage health and health checks.
  • The job cannot create a snapshot at all. Nothing was written to read back.

Steps

  1. Record the file, chain position and offset from the error and stop the failing operation. Verify: the exact chain link is identified
  2. Run the job health check to test the whole chain and list every unreadable link. Verify: affected points are mapped
  3. Test raw reads of the named file from the repository, copying it locally if small enough, and check repository event logs for read or disconnect errors at the same time. Verify: you know whether the file itself or the repository path fails reads
  4. Restore needed data from the newest point that passes the health check. Verify: the fallback restore completes
  5. Take an active full backup and verify the new chain with a health check. Verify: the new chain reads end to end with no next-block error

Variant phrasings

veeam unable to retrieve next block restore

The restore-context phrasing.

veeam backup chain broken next block

The chain-damage wording.

veeam error retrieving block repository

The repository-read variant.

Compatibility: Veeam Backup and Replication 11 and 12, forward and reverse incremental chains on block, file and object-backed repositories.

Why it happens

Incremental chains are only as strong as their weakest link because each point depends on earlier blocks. A truncated write, a manually moved or renamed chain file, repository storage dropping reads, or an interrupted synthetic full can leave the block map pointing at data that is not there. Sequential reads then fail exactly where the map and the file disagree.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Manually copied chain files over slow links are a common cause. Use backup copy jobs instead of file copies.
  • An antivirus quarantine of one VIB file breaks every later point in that chain.
  • If the repository is object storage, check for lifecycle rules that moved older chain objects to a colder tier without Veeam knowing.
