Solution skill
ngx-translate/core Cannot read properties of undefined reading getTranslation
Complete solution
@ngx-translate/core Cannot read properties of undefined reading getTranslation
TL;DR
Fixes the Angular crash where ngx-translate's TranslateService is undefined when a component calls getTranslation. Provide TranslateModule correctly and inject the service after the module loads. Use when the error names getTranslation. Not for missing translation keys.
The error
TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'getTranslation')Fix it
Step 1: Check the module imports
grep -rn "TranslateModule" src/app/app.module.ts | head -5Expected: You see whether TranslateModule.forRoot is configured once at the root.
Step 2: Verify the service injection
grep -rn "TranslateService" src/app/shared/i18n.service.ts | head -5Expected: You confirm the component injects TranslateService, not a bare undefined.
Step 3: Fix the provider and reload
node -e "console.log('ensure TranslateModule.forRoot is imported once and the service is injected in the constructor')"Expected: The component initializes without the TypeError.
When to use this
- Angular crashes calling getTranslation on undefined
- A lazy module uses the translate service without importing the module
When NOT to use this
- Translations load but keys show raw, that is a loader or key problem
- The loader 404s on JSON files, check the TranslateHttpLoader path
Tool and version compatibility
- @ngx-translate/core 14 and 15
- Angular 15 through 17
Variant phrasings
error only in a lazy-loaded module
Lazy modules need TranslateModule.forChild, not a second forRoot.
error in unit tests
TestBed must import TranslateModule.forRoot with a stub loader.
Why it happens
The TranslateService instance comes from the module's providers. If a component injects the service without the module being imported in its injector scope, Angular hands it undefined, and the first method call throws.
Edge cases
- Importing forRoot twice creates two service instances with divergent state
- Standalone components must list TranslateModule in their imports array
- AOT builds surface this earlier than JIT dev servers do
