Solution skill
zendesk "ticket form condition conflict" hiding required fields
Complete solution
A guide to Zendesk ticket form condition conflicts that hide required fields, in the business-apis-integrations category: condition logic review, required-field visibility, and form testing. Use when agents cannot submit tickets because required fields are hidden, or when conditional fields behave unexpectedly. Not for form design basics, field creation, or end-user request forms.
TL;DR
When ticket form conditions hide a field that is marked required, the form becomes unsubmittable: the agent cannot fill a field they cannot see. Audit every condition against the required list, ensure required fields are never hidden by any condition branch, and test every branch of the form. Conditions and required flags are configured in different places, which is how they conflict.
The query
zendesk "ticket form condition conflict" hiding required fieldsUse this when
- Agents cannot submit tickets due to hidden required fields
- Form validation fails on invisible fields
- Conditional fields show or hide unexpectedly
- You are maintaining ticket forms
Not for
- Designing forms from scratch
- Creating custom ticket fields
- End-user web request forms
- Ticket field permissions
Steps
1. List every required field on the form
Export the form's required flags. This is the invariant: no condition may hide any of these fields in any branch. Write the list down before touching conditions.
Expected output: the complete required-field list.
2. Walk every condition branch against the list
For each condition, enumerate which fields it shows and hides. Flag any branch that hides a required field. Branches multiply, so be systematic: one condition at a time.
Expected output: conflicting branches identified.
3. Fix by un-hiding or un-requiring
Either remove the hide from the condition, or remove the required flag if the field is genuinely optional in that branch. Prefer making the field visible; required flags usually exist for reporting that needs the data.
Expected output: no branch hides a required field.
4. Check condition ordering and overlap
Overlapping conditions can hide a field that a later condition shows, or vice versa. Review the evaluation order and simplify overlapping conditions into one clear rule per field.
Expected output: condition order rationalized, overlaps resolved.
5. Test every branch as an agent
Submit a test ticket through each condition branch. Automated review catches logic errors; only a real submission catches the unsubmittable form. Keep a test matrix for future form changes.
Expected output: all branches submittable, test matrix saved.
Template: the checklist
Form condition conflict:
[ ] Required-field list exported as the invariant
[ ] Every condition branch walked against the list
[ ] Conflicts fixed: un-hide or un-require
[ ] Condition order and overlaps reviewed
[ ] Every branch tested with a real submissionVariant phrasings

Why it happens
Required flags live on fields; visibility lives in conditions; nobody reviews them together. Forms accrete conditions over time as teams add branches, and each addition is tested only for its own branch. The conflict appears in the untested combination, usually discovered by an agent at the worst moment.
Edge cases
- End-user forms versus agent forms: the same field can be required for agents and optional for users. Check both forms.
- API ticket creation: API callers bypass form conditions but not required flags. A form that works in UI can still reject API creates.
- New fields default to visible: adding a field can break a carefully hidden layout. Review conditions on every field addition.
- Multilingual forms: conditions are language-independent, but field labels are not. Test branches in each supported language.
