health score API returning 500 error when scoring large accounts
Complete solution
Fixes a health score API returning 500 errors on large accounts by finding the payload, timeout, or fan-out limit that only size triggers. Use when scoring works for small accounts and fails for large ones. Not for a full API outage affecting all accounts.
When it applies

Instructions
TL;DR
Size-only 500s are a limit wearing a disguise: the large account's event volume blows a response payload, a per-account query times out, or a fan-out to sub-accounts exceeds a batch cap. Reproduce with the largest account, read the server-side trace, and the limit names itself.
health score API returning 500 error when scoring large accountsUse this when
- Scoring succeeds for small accounts and 500s for large ones
- The failing accounts share size: seats, events, or sub-accounts
- Retries fail identically, not intermittently
Not for this skill when
- All accounts fail, indicating a deploy or dependency outage
- The 500s are random across sizes, suggesting load rather than limits
Steps
- Reproduce with the single largest account and capture the full server-side error and trace id. Verify: the failing stack and its limit are in hand
- Measure that account's inputs: event count, seat count, history depth the scoring call pulls. Verify: the oversized input is quantified
- Check the scoring code path for unpaginated queries, in-memory aggregation, and response size limits. Verify: the size-sensitive step is located
- Paginate, stream, or pre-aggregate that step, then re-run scoring for the largest five accounts. Verify: all five score successfully within the API timeout
- Add a synthetic largest-account scoring check to monitoring so size regressions alert before CSMs hit them. Verify: the check runs on schedule and would have caught this

Why it happens
Averages hide size failures because test accounts are small. Large accounts multiply everything the API touches, so the failure is deterministic for them and invisible elsewhere. Reproducing at maximum size converts a vague 500 into a specific exceeded limit.
Edge cases / pitfalls
- Raising the API timeout alone often moves the failure to the client or gateway. Fix the underlying fan-out, then set the timeout.
- Pre-aggregating changes score freshness. Note the aggregation cadence in the API contract.
- Partial scoring (some components succeeding) can write a misleading total. Make large-account scoring atomic.
