github push protection bypass request denied: workflow fix

Export

Responds to a denied GitHub push-protection bypass by removing the secret from the commits instead of bypassing, and fixing the workflow that introduced it. It covers history cleanup and prevention. Not for enabling bypass permissions.

TL;DR

A denied bypass request is the system working as intended: do not push the secret. Remove the secret from the commits, rewrite the branch history, rotate the exposed value, and fix the workflow so the secret never enters a commit again.

Error

github push protection bypass request denied: workflow fix

Steps

  1. Accept the denial: the bypass path is closed, so plan the cleanup instead of re-requesting. Expected: no further bypass attempts that burn reviewer goodwill.
  2. Remove the secret from the branch: uncommit or rewrite the affected commits so no commit contains the secret (use an interactive rebase for recent commits or a history-rewrite tool for older ones). Expected: the branch history is secret-free.
  3. Rotate the exposed value: anyone who could see the push attempt may have the secret, so treat it as compromised. Expected: the old value is dead.
  4. Push the cleaned branch. Expected: push protection passes because there is nothing to block.
  5. Fix the workflow: move the secret to a proper secret store or environment variable, add a pre-commit scan, and document the pattern for the team. Expected: the next push never triggers protection.

When to use

  • Push protection blocks a push and the bypass request is denied
  • A secret entered a feature branch
  • Setting up guardrails after an incident

When not to use

  • You have legitimate bypass rights and a false positive (use the bypass flow)
  • The secret predates push protection (retroactive scan skill)

Tool compatibility

  • GitHub push protection, secret scanning; git history rewrite tools

Variant phrasings

push protection blocked my commit

Remove the secret from the commit rather than bypassing; bypass is for false positives.

bypass request denied github

Treat the denial as final for that push; clean the branch and rotate.

Why it happens

Push protection scans pushed commits for known secret patterns and blocks the push before the secret lands on the server. Bypass requires privileged approval precisely so it is not a rubber stamp; denial means the organization expects cleanup, not an override.
