## TL;DR
Dialogflow CX kills webhooks at 10 seconds with no negotiation, so any fulfillment slower than that must not be synchronous. Acknowledge fast and continue async: return a holding response within the budget, run the slow work in the background, and deliver the result on the next turn or via a follow-up event. The 10-second wall is a design constraint, not a bug to work around.

## The query

```text
dialogflow cx webhook timeout after 10 seconds
```

## Use this when

- Webhooks time out in Dialogflow CX
- Fulfillment calls exceed 10 seconds
- You are designing webhook integrations
- Slow backends need to work with Dialogflow

## Not for

- Intent and entity design
- Training phrase authoring
- NLU confidence tuning
- Agent testing in the console

## Steps

### 1. Budget every webhook under 8 seconds

Treat 8 seconds as the real limit to leave headroom for network variance. Profile each webhook handler; anything near the budget gets the async treatment. Budgets turn timeouts from surprises into design inputs.

Expected output: all handlers profiled against an 8-second budget.

### 2. Return a holding response immediately for slow work

When the real work takes longer, respond at once with a holding message ("Checking that now") and a session flag marking work in progress. The conversation continues; the user is not staring at a timeout.

Expected output: holding responses keeping conversations alive.

### 3. Continue the work asynchronously and deliver on next turn

Run the slow operation in the background, store the result in session parameters or an external store, and present it when the user next speaks or via a follow-up event. Async continuation is the core pattern for slow backends.

Expected output: background jobs delivering results on the next turn.

### 4. Make webhook handlers idempotent

Timeouts cause retries, and retries cause duplicate side effects. Every webhook handler must tolerate being called twice for the same turn: dedupe on the session plus turn identifier before acting.

Expected output: retry-safe webhook handlers.

### 5. Monitor webhook latency percentiles, not averages

Track p95 and p99 latency per webhook. Averages hide the timeouts; percentiles show how close to the wall you live. Alert when p95 crosses the budget.

Expected output: percentile latency monitoring with budget alerts.

## Template: the checklist

```text
Webhook timeout survival:
[ ] All handlers budgeted under 8 seconds
[ ] Holding responses for slow operations
[ ] Async continuation delivering on next turn
[ ] Idempotent handlers tolerating retries
[ ] p95/p99 latency monitored against the budget
```

## Variant phrasings

### dialogflow webhook exceeds 10 seconds

Steps 1 and 2. Budget it, hold the turn.

### fulfillment timeout dialogflow cx

Steps 2 and 3. Hold fast, continue async.

### slow api behind dialogflow webhook

Full sequence as the integration pattern.

## Why it happens

Conversational turns have a human patience budget, and 10 seconds is already generous: users will not wait longer mid-conversation. Dialogflow enforces the budget at the platform level so every integration feels responsive. Slow backends (legacy APIs, complex queries) simply do not fit a synchronous turn; the platform is telling you the architecture, not punishing you.

## Edge cases

- The holding response firing too often: if every turn holds, the bot feels stalling. Fix the backend instead of normalizing holds.
- Session parameter size limits: large async results may not fit session storage. Use an external store keyed by session.
- Follow-up events racing user input: the user may speak before the async result lands. Handle the interleaving explicitly.
- Regional latency: webhook hosting far from the Dialogflow region eats the budget. Co-locate.
