agent failed to access the warehouse: ip allowlist blocked its egress
Teaches an agent to diagnose and resolve warehouse IP allowlist blocks by confirming the block, identifying its egress IP, and getting it allowlisted or running from an allowed network. Use when warehouse connections fail from the agent's network. Not for credential failures.
TL;DR
The warehouse rejected the connection because the agent's egress IP is not on the allowlist. The agent should confirm the block (connection timeout, not auth error), find its egress IP, request allowlisting through the proper channel, and verify with a minimal connection test.
Error
agent failed to access the warehouse: ip allowlist blocked its egressSteps
- Confirm it is a network block, not auth: connection timeouts or refused connections indicate network; auth errors indicate credentials. Expected: the correct classification.
- Determine the agent's egress IP (the address the warehouse sees). Expected: the exact IP to allowlist.
- Request allowlisting through the team's network process, specifying the warehouse, the IP, and the business reason. Expected: a ticket or request in flight.
- Meanwhile, check whether an allowed network path exists (a VPN, a bastion, or an internal runner). Expected: a possible workaround while waiting.
- Verify with a minimal connection test (
dbt debugor a trivial query). Expected: the connection succeeds before real work resumes.
When to use
- Warehouse connections fail from the agent's environment with network errors.
- New agent infrastructure (new cloud region, new runner).
When not to use
- Connections fail with authentication errors (fix credentials).
- The warehouse is down for everyone (an outage, not an allowlist).
Tool compatibility
- All warehouses with IP allowlists; dbt debug for verification.
Variant phrasings
Works from a laptop, fails from the agent runner
The laptop's IP is allowlisted; the runner's is not.
Intermittent connection failures
Egress IPs that rotate (NAT pools) intermittently fall off the allowlist.
Why it happens
Warehouses restrict network access to known IPs for security. New agent infrastructure gets new egress IPs that nobody allowlisted, so connections die at the network layer before authentication is even attempted.
Edge cases
- Cloud NAT gateways use pools; allowlist the whole egress range, not one IP.
- Some warehouses also need the agent's region allowlisted, not just the IP.
- Document the allowlist requirement in the agent setup runbook so the next environment gets it right.
