Solution skill

papermill run failed: API rate limit hit inside notebook cell

Version 1Sign in to save

Complete solution

Handles a papermill run failing when a cell hits an API rate limit: add retries with backoff in the cell and make the run resumable. The notebook must tolerate the API's limits. Not for auth failures.

TL;DR

A cell that calls a rate-limited API will eventually get a 429, and papermill treats it like any other exception: the run fails. Make the cell resilient with retries and exponential backoff around the API calls, and cache responses so a retry does not re-spend quota. For scheduled runs, also spread calls out (sleep between pages) so the run stays under the limit instead of bouncing off it.

papermill run failed: API rate limit hit inside notebook cell

Use this when

  • A papermill run fails with a 429 or rate-limit error from inside a cell.
  • The notebook loops over API pages or items.
  • Retries of the run hit the limit again at the same place.

Not for this skill when

  • The API rejects with 401/403. That is auth, not rate limiting.
  • The limit is hit outside the notebook. That is a pipeline problem.

Steps

  1. Find the call site: read the traceback's cell and the API client code. Verify: you know which loop hammers the API.
  2. Add retries with exponential backoff around the API calls (or use the client's built-in retry). Verify: a simulated 429 is retried, not raised.
  3. Cache responses to disk keyed by request. Verify: a re-run reuses the cache and spends no new quota.
  4. Add pacing: sleep between pages or use the API's batch endpoints. Verify: the run's request rate stays under the documented limit.
  5. Re-run papermill. Verify: the run completes without rate-limit failures.

Variant phrasings

papermill api rate limit 429

Short form. Backoff plus cache.

notebook cell hitting rate limit

The cell phrasing. Pace the loop.

papermill retry failed api calls

The resilience phrasing. Retries with backoff.

Compatibility: papermill 2.x with any HTTP client. Retry logic lives in the cell, not in papermill.

Why it happens

Notebooks developed interactively make API calls at human speed, so rate limits never trigger during development. Under papermill the same loop runs at machine speed and blows through the quota in seconds. The 429 is the API doing its job; the notebook was written as if the limit did not exist.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Retrying without backoff hammers harder and can get the key suspended. Always back off.
  • A cache keyed wrong (ignoring a parameter) serves stale data silently. Key on the full request.
  • Some APIs count retries against the quota. Pacing matters more than retrying for tight limits.
  • Do not commit API keys in the notebook to work around limits with more keys. That is a different problem with a worse solution.
