## TL;DR
GitLab rejects masked variables that break its masking rules: too short, multiline, or containing characters the masker cannot handle. Make the value single-line and long enough, or save it unmasked (or as a file variable) if masking cannot apply. The variable then saves cleanly.

## Error
```text
gitlab ci: masked variable failed validation on save
```

## Steps
1. Read the exact validation message on save; it names the violated rule. Expected: you know whether the problem is length, newlines, or characters.
2. For multiline values (private keys, JSON blobs), switch the variable type to File so GitLab writes it to a temp file instead of masking an environment string. Expected: the variable saves without masking validation.
3. For short values, check the minimum length requirement for masking and either lengthen the value or save it unmasked if the value is not actually sensitive. Expected: the save succeeds under the correct type.
4. Strip trailing newlines and carriage returns that editors sneak in; paste the value through a plain-text check first. Expected: no invisible characters trip the validator.
5. Save again and confirm the variable appears in the project's CI variables list with the expected flags. Expected: the variable is stored and available to jobs.

## When to use
- Saving a GitLab CI variable with "Masked" checked fails validation
- Storing keys, certificates, or JSON in CI variables
- Choosing between masked, file, and plain variable types

## When not to use
- A masked value leaked into logs (exposure response, different skill)
- Variables not reaching the job (protected or environment scoping)

## Tool compatibility
- GitLab CI/CD variables (masked, file-type, protected, environment-scoped)

## Variant phrasings
### gitlab variable must be single line
Multiline secrets belong in file-type variables; the masker only handles single-line values.

### masked variable too short gitlab
Either use a longer value or drop the masked flag; short values cannot be masked reliably.

## Why it happens
The masker needs a value distinctive enough to find-and-replace safely in logs: long enough to avoid false positives, single-line so the matcher works, and free of characters that break the substitution. Values that cannot meet those rules are rejected at save time rather than masked badly.
