## TL;DR
Cypress snapshots the DOM when a command runs and asserts against that snapshot, but if your app re-renders in between, the snapshot no longer matches anything and the assertion flakes. Chain the assertion directly off a fresh `cy.get()` so the query re-runs on retry, never store element references across renders, and wait for the re-render to finish before you assert. The flake goes away because every retry works from current DOM.

```text
cypress "A snapshot has not been taken for this command" flake when the app re-renders mid-assertion
```

## Steps
1. Find the flaky assertion and check whether the subject comes from an earlier command or an aliased element rather than a fresh query. Expected: you spot the stale reference, for example an alias created before a re-render.
2. Rewrite the assertion as one chain off a fresh query: `cy.get('[data-testid=price]').should('contain', '$42')`. Expected: on retry Cypress re-queries the DOM instead of reusing the dead snapshot.
3. If the app re-renders on a timer or poll, wait for it to settle first: intercept the polling request and `cy.wait('@poll')`, or assert on a stable element that only appears after the final render. Expected: the assertion runs against the settled DOM.
4. Remove any pattern that holds elements across renders, such as saving a subject in a variable and acting on it after navigation or state change. Expected: no command in the spec acts on a subject older than its own query.
5. Rerun the spec repeatedly in CI. Expected: the snapshot error stops appearing.

## Use this when
- Cypress fails with "A snapshot has not been taken for this command"
- The page re-renders, polls, or navigates between the query and the assertion
- The same assertion passes when the app is idle

## Not for this skill when
- The element never exists (missing data or wrong selector)
- The failure is a plain timeout with no snapshot message
- The app under test does not re-render (look for a different cause)

## Variant phrasings
- cypress snapshot has not been taken flake
- cypress assertion fails app re-rendered
- cypress stale element snapshot error

## Why it happens
Cypress commands are async and retryable: each command takes a DOM snapshot and the assertion retries against it. When the app replaces the DOM node mid-retry (a re-render, a poll update, a route transition), the snapshot's node is detached and the assertion cannot proceed, producing this error instead of a normal retry.

## Edge cases
- Polling every second makes the window tiny; either pause polling in test mode or assert inside a `should` callback that re-queries each time.
- Aliases (`as('myEl')`) freeze the subject at alias time, so they are the most common source of this flake on dynamic pages. Re-query instead of aliasing elements that re-render.
- If the re-render is caused by the test's own action (typing triggers a filter), add the wait right after that action, not at the top of the test.
