## TL;DR
A feed connection failure can be DNS, egress firewall, a changed feed endpoint, an expired feed credential, or the provider being down, and each has a different owner. Work the layers in order from the agent host, confirm which layer breaks, and then make the agent resilient: cache recent feed data locally with timestamps, mark verdicts made on stale cache as degraded, and queue fresh lookups for when the feed returns rather than failing triage outright.

```text
the triage agent couldn't connect to the threat-intel feed; the lookup step failed
```

## Use this when
- Every intel lookup errors while other agent network calls work, or all fail together.
- The feed provider status page or your network logs show a change at the failure time.

## Not for this skill when
- Only one indicator type fails, such as file hashes. That is a feed content or endpoint path issue, not connectivity.
- The feed returns empty results successfully. That is coverage, not connection.

## Steps
1. From the agent host, test name resolution and connection to the feed endpoint and record where it stops. Verify: the failing layer is identified.
2. Check the feed credential status and the current endpoint documentation for changes. Verify: credential and endpoint are current, or the needed update is made.
3. Check egress rules for the agent environment if the connection is blocked locally. Verify: the network path is open per policy, with any change approved by the network owner.
4. Add the resilient behaviour: use timestamped cache on failure, flag degraded verdicts, and retry fresh lookups on a schedule. Verify: a simulated feed outage degrades triage instead of stopping it.
5. Restore the feed and confirm fresh lookups flow, then re-check any verdicts made on stale data. Verify: degraded verdicts are refreshed or explicitly accepted.

## Variant phrasings
### threat intel feed connection failed agent lookup
The feed connection variant.
### triage degraded mode cached intel feed outage
The degraded mode variant.

Compatibility: Commercial and open threat intel feeds with API access, agent egress environments.

## Why it happens
A single external feed is a single point of failure placed outside your control. Agents that treat it as always-there discover its absence during the largest campaigns, when the feed is most loaded and most needed.

## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Multiple feeds with different failure modes are the structural answer; cache is the tactical one.
- Stale intel is still intel if its age is honest. Always carry the timestamp into the verdict.
- Feed credentials expire like all others. Put them in the same renewal tracker.
