## TL;DR
Credit memo batches fail asymmetrically: the memos reduce customer balances in the subledger while the GL credit to the control account never posts, or the GL posts and the subledger batch rolls back. List the batch memos, check each one in both the subledger and the GL, and complete only the missing side. Re-tie AR to the control account memo by memo before releasing the next batch.

```
## Use this when
- The AR aging total and the GL control account diverged after a credit memo batch error.
- The batch shows failed, partial, or retry status in the AR module.
- The difference equals the total of one memo or one batch segment.
## Not for this skill when
- The break dates to invoice posting or cash application, not credit memos. Follow those rec paths.
- Memos were issued in a different system entirely, such as a billing platform not yet integrated. That is an integration gap, not a batch failure.
## Steps
1. Export the credit memo batch with memo numbers, customers, and amounts, and note the batch status per segment. Verify: the batch total and memo count are fixed as your baseline
2. For each memo, confirm its presence in the customer subledger and in the GL control account detail. Verify: each memo is marked both sides, subledger only, or GL only
3. Total the one-sided memos by direction. Verify: the one-sided total equals the subledger to GL difference
4. Complete the missing side only, using the original memo numbers as references, or roll back the posted side and rerun the whole batch under supervision. Verify: no memo ends up posted twice on either side
5. Rerun the AR aging and the control account balance and confirm they tie, then release the held batch queue. Verify: aging total equals control account balance
## Variant phrasings
### AR control account out of balance credit memos
The control-account phrasing.
### credit memo batch failed subledger GL mismatch
Searching by the failed batch event.
Compatibility: AR modules in NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Dynamics 365, and QuickBooks with batch-posted credit memos.
## Why it happens
Subledger and GL updates for a batch are separate transactions in most ERPs. The customer-facing side commits first because it drives the aging users see, and the GL side posts in a second step that can fail on a locked period, a missing tax account, or a timeout. The batch status then reads failed even though half the work is durably posted, and a naive full rerun double-posts the committed half.
## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Credit memos against invoices in a closed period often post the GL side to the current period while the subledger dates them back. That timing split looks like a break for one close cycle.
- Unapplied credit memos inflate the subledger side if the aging counts them but the GL control excludes unapplied items in its report definition. Align report definitions before posting corrections.
- A memo voided in the subledger after the GL posted leaves the mirror image break. The same per-memo check finds it.
