Solution skill

data quality check failed: duplicate rows error exceeded allowed duplicates

Version 1

Complete solution

Count the duplicates precisely, then find the load or join that creates them: group the table by its full business key, measure how many duplicate groups exist and how far above the allowed tolerance they sit, and fix the creating step. Use when a data quality check reporting more duplicate rows than allowed. Not for a unique test failing on one key combination, which needs the key-level debugging path instead.

TL;DR

Count the duplicates precisely, then find the load or join that creates them: group the table by its full business key, measure how many duplicate groups exist and how far above the allowed tolerance they sit, and fix the creating step. Raising the allowed-duplicates tolerance without that trace turns a load bug into accepted data.

data quality check failed: duplicate rows error exceeded allowed duplicates

Use this when

  • The check or run fails with this symptom: the duplicate rows check fails with the duplicate count above the allowed limit.
  • You are working on a data quality check reporting more duplicate rows than allowed and the failure repeats on the same data or configuration.
  • You need the failing rows, rule, or stage isolated before changing thresholds or code.

Not for this skill when

  • A unique test failing on one key combination, which needs the key-level debugging path instead.
  • The error text names a different tool, stage, or root cause. Match the verbatim error first and use that skill.

Steps

  1. Group the table by the business key columns and count duplicate groups and excess rows. Verify: the duplicate groups, keys, and excess count are listed
  2. Compare duplicate volume before and after the latest load to see whether one load introduced them. Verify: the introducing load is identified or ruled out
  3. Inspect the introducing load for a retry without cleanup, a join fan-out, or a source resend of the same file. Verify: the duplication mechanism is found
  4. Remove the excess rows keeping the latest record per key, and fix the load to be idempotent with a merge or a delete-by-partition step. Verify: the table holds one row per key and the load is idempotent
  5. Rerun the duplicate check and confirm the count is at or below the allowed tolerance, ideally zero. Verify: the check passes on the cleaned table

Why it happens

Duplicate checks tolerate tiny counts from edge retries, so breaching the limit usually means a systematic cause: a load that ran twice, a fan-out join promoted to the final table, or a source that resent a batch. The finished table shows the symptom, the pipeline history shows the cause.

Edge cases / pitfalls

  • Keep the tolerance at zero for tables with a clear business key. Tolerances hide early warnings.
  • Record duplicate counts per load in the run metadata so growth is visible before the limit breaks.
