commvault restore failed "media not in library"

Version 1

Complete solution

Describes how to restore in Commvault when a restore reports media not in library by identifying the required tape, checking its library and export state, and using copy precedence or a recall. Use when the needed volume was exported or sits in another library. Not for a disk library restore that never used tape.

TL;DR

Find the exact barcode the restore needs in Commvault, then check whether that volume is exported, in a different library, or marked offline. Recall or load the tape, run a library inventory, set the restore to prefer an available secondary disk copy if one exists, and retry. Do not cancel other jobs or age the media while you work out where it is.

commvault restore failed "media not in library"

Use this when

  • A Commvault file or VM restore fails or waits with media not in library.
  • The data was backed up to tape and the retention copy may have been vaulted offsite.
  • A secondary disk copy exists but the restore still requests the tape copy.

Not for this skill when

  • The backup job itself failed to write to tape. That is a media or drive write problem, not a restore media location problem.
  • No copy of the data exists on any media. Location fixes cannot recover aged or overwritten data.
  • The requested point was never backed up. Check job history and browse results first.

Steps

  1. Browse the restore, note the copy it selected, and open the restore job details to record the required media barcode or barcodes and the library named in the job. Check the job pending or failure reason in Job Manager rather than relying on the short console message. Verify: you have a specific barcode list and know whether the job wants the primary tape copy or a secondary copy
  2. In Media Management or the library view search for each barcode and record its state: in library, exported, in mail slot, in a different library, or marked bad or aged. Compare the physical library inventory with what CommServe believes after the last inventory scan. Verify: every required barcode has a known physical location and a Commvault state that matches or explains the mismatch
  3. If the tape is offsite, raise a recall through your vaulting process and, in parallel, check whether a secondary or synchronous disk copy of the same backup exists. In the restore options set copy precedence to prefer the available disk copy where your policy allows it, which often completes the restore without waiting for the recall. Verify: either the restore restarts from an available copy or the recall request is logged with the exact barcodes needed
  4. When the tape arrives, load it into the correct library, run an inventory or barcode scan so CommServe updates the slot location, and clear any offline flag that was set only because the volume was absent. Do not format, initialise or mark the volume for overwrite. Verify: the library view shows the barcode in a slot, online, with the correct media group and retention
  5. Resume or rerun the restore to a test destination first if the data is large or the application is sensitive. Watch the restore read from the expected media and confirm the job mounts the tape rather than requesting another volume immediately. Verify: the restore mounts the named media, data starts transferring, and a sample restored file opens correctly
  6. After the restore, review why the primary request went to an absent tape. Adjust copy precedence, vault tracking or recall lead times in the runbook, and record the barcode locations found during this incident. Verify: the runbook lists the copy precedence used and the vault location process that will be checked before the next tape restore

Why it happens

Commvault restores are copy aware. The browse result can point at a primary tape copy even when that volume has been exported by vaulting, moved to another library, or left with a stale slot record after a library inventory change. CommServe will not silently substitute another copy unless precedence and the restore options allow it, so the job reports the media as not in the library and waits or fails. Tape itself is rarely damaged in this scenario. The mismatch is almost always between physical location, library inventory state in CommServe, and the copy the restore selected.

Variants and edge cases

Aged and recycled media need care. If the barcode shows as aged with data still listed, do not run data aging again and do not reuse the volume until support confirms the restore path. Also watch multi tape restores: the first volume may be present while a later spanned volume is offsite, so check the full barcode list from the job, not just the first tape requested.

commvault restore waiting for media tape exported

The vaulting variant. The tape exists but is offsite, so the real work is the recall lead time and whether a disk copy can serve the restore sooner.

commvault media not found in library after library replacement

Use after a library swap or rescan. Barcodes are present physically but CommServe slot mapping is stale until a full inventory reconciles it.

commvault restore picks tape copy instead of disk copy

The copy precedence variant. Fix the restore options or precedence order so the available synchronous copy is used, and confirm the selected copy in the job details before rerunning.
