duckdb motherduck vs local mode
Compares DuckDB local mode with MotherDuck cloud mode and when to use each. Use it when deciding where to run DuckDB workloads, sharing datasets, or debugging cloud-vs-local behavior differences. Not for other embedded databases.
TL;DR
Local mode keeps everything in your process: fastest, free, no network, and perfect for pipelines and tests. MotherDuck mode adds cloud storage, shared databases, and scale-to-zero compute on DuckDB files, at the cost of network hops and a vendor dependency. Rule of thumb: local for builds and batch jobs, MotherDuck when people need to share a dataset or you want a managed service without running infra.
The query
duckdb motherduck vs local modeUse this when
- you are deciding between local DuckDB and MotherDuck for a project
- a query is slow on MotherDuck and you suspect data is crossing the network
- you need to share a DuckDB dataset with other people or services
Not for
- DuckDB SQL syntax questions, which are the same in both modes
- other embedded engines like SQLite or LanceDB
Steps
- Connect locally with a file or in-memory database, and to MotherDuck with ATTACH 'md:' plus your auth token. Keep the token out of code and logs.
Expected output: Both connection paths work from your environment.
- Keep heavy scans and joins local. On MotherDuck, every byte scanned crosses the network, so push filters down and avoid SELECT * on big tables.
Expected output: Query plans show the expensive work happening where the data lives.
- Store secrets like the MotherDuck token in environment-based config, not in the SQL string, so they never land in query history.
Expected output: The token is injected at runtime and never appears in code or logs.
- Prototype locally, then point the same SQL at MotherDuck for the shared version. The dialect is the same, only the storage changes.
Expected output: Your pipeline runs unchanged against both backends.
- Measure before committing: run your top 3 queries in both modes and compare wall time and cost.
Expected output: You have numbers showing which mode fits your workload.
