# Jenkins "There is no credentials with id": pipeline credential debugging

TL;DR: The ID in your pipeline does not match any credential Jenkins can see from that job's scope. Open the Credentials page for the exact folder (or the global store) the job runs in, copy the real ID character for character, and paste it in. Folder-scoped credentials are invisible to jobs outside the folder.

```text
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: There is no credentials with id 'deploy-key'
```

## Steps

1. Go to the job's folder in Jenkins (or the top level for global), open Credentials, and confirm the credential is listed in that store.
**Expected:** You see the credential where the job looks.

2. Click into the credential and copy the ID exactly. Do not retype it; IDs are case-sensitive and easy to mistype.
**Expected:** The `credentialsId` in the pipeline matches byte for byte.

3. If the credential was deleted and recreated, update every reference. Jenkins assigns a fresh ID on recreation, so the old pipeline still points at a ghost.
**Expected:** No stale IDs remain in any pipeline or shared library.

4. Check the credential kind matches the binding: a username-plus-password credential bound as a secret string (or the reverse) fails differently but is worth ruling out.
**Expected:** Kind and binding agree.

5. For multibranch and folder jobs, confirm the lookup runs in the right context. A pipeline in folder A cannot see folder B's store, even if you can see both in the UI as an admin.
**Expected:** The credential lives in a store the job is allowed to read.

## Use this when
- A pipeline fails with `There is no credentials with id` or `Couldn't find any credentials`

## Not for this skill when
- The target system rejects the username or password. The credential exists; its value is wrong
- The secret store itself is unreachable. That is a Vault or cloud outage, not an ID problem
- The error is about a missing plugin. Install the credentials binding plugin first

## Variant phrasings
### ERROR: Couldn't find any credentials with id 'deploy-key'
Same missing-or-mis-scoped ID, alternate wording.

## Why it happens
Credential IDs are scoped to a store, not global names. Folders have their own stores, the UI shows friendly descriptions while pipelines need exact IDs, and recreation silently mints new IDs. Any one of those turns a working reference into this error.

## Edge cases
- IDs are case-sensitive; `Deploy-Key` and `deploy-key` are different credentials
- The Declarative `credentials()` helper in an `environment` block throws its own variant of this error when the ID is wrong
- Credentials defined in a domain other than the default global domain need the domain configured on the lookup
