## TL;DR
Wasabi slow down errors are rate limiting asking the client to reduce request frequency, which backup tools trigger with high parallel small-object workloads. Lower concurrent transfers and API request rates in the tool, batch small files where the tool supports it, spread the workload across more buckets or prefixes if needed, and retry with backoff so throttled requests recover.

wasabi backup "slow down" rate errors
```
## Use this when
- Backups to Wasabi fail or crawl with slow down, too many requests, or 503 slow down messages.
- Small-file backups throttle while large-file backups run fine.
- Raising tool concurrency made throughput worse, not better.
## Not for this skill when
- AWS S3 throttling on a large account. Similar shape, different limits and remedies.
- Wasabi authentication failures. Those are credential errors, not rate errors.
## Steps
1. Note the error frequency and which operations trigger it: puts, lists, or deletes. Verify: throttled operations are identified
2. Reduce the backup tool concurrent transfers and request pacing to conservative values. Verify: new concurrency settings are applied
3. Run a timed test backup and compare throughput and error count with the previous settings. Verify: errors drop and throughput is acceptable
4. If throttling persists, spread the backup set across additional buckets or prefixes per Wasabi guidance. Verify: the layout change is implemented for new data
5. Restore full scheduling with backoff retries enabled and monitor error rates. Verify: jobs complete with minimal slow down errors
## Variant phrasings
### wasabi slowdown error backup too many requests
The request-rate phrasing.
### wasabi s3 slow down throttle backup tool
The throttle variant.
### wasabi rate limit small files backup
The small-file wording.
Compatibility: Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage S3-compatible API used by Veeam, MSP360, rclone and similar backup tools.
## Why it happens
Wasabi publishes request rate expectations per bucket and account that differ from AWS habits, and backup tools tuned for AWS defaults can exceed them with metadata-heavy small file sets. The slow down response is protective, not a fault, so the remedy is client pacing and layout, which is counterintuitive for teams used to adding parallelism for speed.
## Edge cases / pitfalls
- Deletes and lists count toward rates too. Retention cleanup storms can throttle the backup that follows.
- Consolidate many tiny backups into archive files before upload when the tool allows it.
- Keep the working concurrency numbers in the runbook. Tool upgrades reset them to aggressive defaults.
