## TL;DR
FRED's 400 on a series ID usually means the ID is mistyped, retired, or needs the exact case FRED uses (like GDP vs gdp). Look the series up on the FRED website search, copy the ID exactly, and validate IDs against the API's series endpoint before the pipeline run.

## The error
```text
HTTP 400 Bad Request
{"error_message": "Invalid series id: gdpp. Did you mean GDP?"}
GET /fred/series/observations?series_id=gdpp
```

## Fix it
1. Search the series on the FRED website and copy the series ID exactly, including case. FRED IDs are case-sensitive.
   Expected: Expected: the website shows the canonical ID, e.g. GDP.
2. Validate the ID with the /fred/series endpoint before requesting observations; it returns metadata or a clean error.
   Expected: Expected: the metadata call succeeds for the corrected ID.
3. Check whether the series was discontinued; FRED marks retired series and suggests replacements in the series notes.
   Expected: Expected: you find the successor series ID if the original was retired.
4. In the pipeline, keep a validated series-ID allowlist and fail fast at config load on any ID the series endpoint rejects.
   Expected: Expected: bad IDs break the deploy with a clear message, not the scheduled run.

## When to use
- Your FRED pull 400s on a series ID that looks right.
- You need to handle retired or renamed FRED series.
- You run macro-data ingestion with a fixed series list.

## When not to use
- The error is 401 - that is the API key, not the series ID.
- The series exists but returns no observations for your dates - widen the date range.
- You need real-time vintages - use the ALFRED vintage endpoints instead.

## Why it happens
FRED series IDs are exact, case-sensitive strings, and series get discontinued or renamed. A single wrong character, or an ID from an outdated tutorial, produces a 400. The API even suggests corrections, which makes this one of the more diagnosable errors.

## Variant phrasings
### fred api invalid series id 400
Same failure and fix; some searchers phrase the query this way.
### fred series_id bad request fix
Same failure and fix; some searchers phrase the query this way.

## Edge cases
- Some popular series have similarly-named variants (GDP vs GDPC1); picking the wrong one silently changes the data.
- The observations endpoint 400s differently for bad dates than for bad series IDs; read the error_message.
