## TL;DR
"No reply from agent" in an AutoGen group chat means the selected speaker never produced a message, usually because its reply function errored silently, it is waiting on a human, or speaker selection picked an agent with nothing to say. Fix it by checking the silent agent's logs, setting a clear termination condition, and giving the group manager a fallback speaker.

```text
autogen 'no reply from agent' group chat timeout
```

## Use this when
- An AutoGen group chat hangs and logs this timeout
- One agent never speaks when selected
- An agent-built multi-agent setup deadlocks mid-conversation

## Not for this skill when
- An agent replies with an LLM error (thats the model call, not the chat loop)
- The chat ends at max turns (thats the turn budget)
- A tool inside a reply fails (thats the tool)

## Steps

1. Identify which agent was selected and stayed silent. Turn on verbose chat logging:

```python
import logging
logging.basicConfig(level=logging.DEBUG)
```
Expected output: the log shows the selected speaker's name right before the stall. That agent is where the bug lives.

2. Check whether the silent agent is waiting for human input:

```python
agent = AssistantAgent("worker", human_input_mode="NEVER", llm_config=cfg)
```
Expected output: with `human_input_mode="NEVER"` the agent cant block on a prompt. The default `ALWAYS`/`TERMINATE` modes pause for input nobody will ever give in an automated run.

3. Give the group chat a termination condition so a silent agent ends the chat instead of hanging it:

```python
groupchat = GroupChat(agents=[...], max_round=20)
manager = GroupChatManager(groupchat=groupchat)
```
Expected output: the chat ends after 20 rounds even if an agent goes quiet. Without `max_round`, one silent speaker hangs the loop forever.

4. Check the silent agent's reply function for swallowed exceptions:

```python
# wrap generate_reply to log instead of swallowing
```
Expected output: the real exception surfaces. Custom reply functions that catch everything and return None produce exactly this timeout with no other symptom.

## Variant phrasings

### group chat picks the same agent repeatedly then stalls
Speaker selection is looping on one agent whose replies are empty. Check its system message and reply path.

### timeout only with a specific agent in the group
That agent's config differs (human input mode, missing llm_config). Diff it against a working agent.

## Why it happens
GroupChatManager selects a speaker and waits for a message. If the speaker's reply path blocks (human input), crashes silently (swallowed exception), or returns nothing (misconfigured agent), the manager has no message to broadcast and eventually times out. The timeout message names the symptom; the cause is always in the selected agent's reply path.

## Edge cases
- An agent with an empty system message may produce empty replies that look like silence; the manager then keeps re-selecting it.
- Nested chats compound this: a stall in the inner chat surfaces as a timeout in the outer one.
- If you use custom speaker selection, a bug there can select agents that have already terminated.
