how to grant temporary admin rights safely

Complete solution

Grants temporary administrative rights with proper scoping, time limits, and review. Covers just-in-time elevation, approval, and revocation. Use for temporary admin needs. Not for permanent admin assignments.

TL;DR

Grant the narrowest admin right needed, for the shortest time that works (hours, not days), with a ticket recording who approved and why. Use just-in-time elevation (PIM or equivalent) where available. Verify revocation afterward; temporary grants that linger are permanent grants.

The error

(Access request; no error. "I need admin for a day.")

Steps

  1. Clarify exactly what admin right is needed and why: local admin on one machine is very different from domain admin. Expected: scoped need. Push back on "admin access" without specifics.
  2. Get approval from the user's manager and, for privileged tiers, from security. Expected: approved with the scope and duration in the ticket.
  3. Grant via just-in-time elevation if available (Entra PIM, CyberArk, or local admin password solution). Expected: time-boxed elevation. JIT is the right tool; manual group adds are the fallback.
  4. If manual: add to the group, set a calendar reminder for removal, and document the removal time in the ticket. Expected: removal scheduled. The reminder is the control.
  5. At expiry, remove the right and verify: check group membership and have the user confirm loss of elevation. Expected: revoked and verified.

When to use

  • Software installs needing admin
  • Short-term administrative tasks

When not to use

  • Permanent admin needs (use the role assignment process)
  • Emergency break-glass (different process)

Compatibility

  • Entra PIM, AD groups, LAPS; any platform with time-boxed elevation

Variants

Developer needing local admin regularly

Consider a standing local-admin-via-JIT solution rather than repeated tickets.

Vendor needing admin

Scope to the specific systems and time window; supervise if possible.

Why it happens

Temporary admin is the most abused access pattern: granted quickly, forgotten permanently. Time-boxing plus verification is the entire control.

Edge cases

  • Never grant domain admin temporarily as a shortcut; the blast radius is total.
  • Log all elevation usage; review the logs for the grant period.
