my search history disappeared: what to tell users

Export

What to tell users whose search history disappeared: the usual causes are signed-out sessions, a different account or profile, and auto-clear settings. Use when users report missing history, or when writing account troubleshooting docs. Not for data recovery engineering, privacy policy design, or browser history forensics.

TL;DR

Search history "disappears" when the user is looking in the wrong place: signed out, a different account, a different browser profile, or an auto-clear setting doing its job. Walk them through the identity check first: which account, which profile, which device. Real data loss is rare. Most history is exactly where they left it, under a different login.

The query

my search history disappeared: what to tell users

Use this when

  • Users report missing search history
  • Account troubleshooting
  • "My data disappeared" tickets about history
  • Writing help docs for history features

Not for

  • Data recovery engineering
  • Privacy policy design
  • Browser history forensics
  • Deleted-account recovery

Steps

1. Confirm the identity: account, profile, device

Which account is signed in right now. Browser profiles multiply this: Chrome Profile 1 vs Profile 2 have separate histories. Check each. This resolves the majority.

Expected output: the signed-in identity verified.

2. Check for signed-out or incognito sessions

History from signed-out sessions may not sync anywhere. If they searched while signed out, that history lives only on that device's local browser history, if at all.

Expected output: session state at the time of searching established.

3. Check auto-clear and retention settings

Auto-delete settings (3 months, 18 months), browser clear-on-exit, and "pause history" toggles all legitimately remove history. Review the settings with the user before calling it a bug.

Expected output: retention settings reviewed.

4. Look in the right history surface

App search history, browser history, and account activity are three different stores. Users conflate them. Point them at each one: the app's recent searches, the browser history page, the account activity dashboard.

Expected output: all three surfaces checked.

Template: the reply

Let us track down your history, [Name]. It is usually in the wrong place rather than gone:

1. Which account are you signed in with right now? If you use multiple accounts or browser profiles, check each one. History follows the login.
2. Were you signed in when you searched? Signed-out searches do not sync to your account.
3. Check your auto-delete settings: [where to find them]. If auto-delete is on, older history is removed on schedule.
4. Look in all three places: the app's recent searches, your browser history, and [account activity page].

Tell me what you find in each and we will go from there.

Variant phrasings

search history gone

Steps 1 and 2. Identity, then session state.

history deleted itself

Step 3. Auto-delete or clear-on-exit is usually the cause.

cannot find my recent searches

Step 4. Wrong surface; check all three.

Why it works

"Disappeared" assumes deletion, but the common causes are misplacement and settings. The identity check first because it is the fastest win and the most common cause. Walking surfaces systematically beats asking "are you sure" repeatedly.

Edge cases

  • Shared devices: someone else may have cleared it or used a different profile. Ask gently.
  • The account was actually deleted: then the history is gone per the deletion policy. Say so plainly.
  • Synced across devices with a delay: give sync time before concluding.
  • Privacy regulations: some deletions are legally required. Do not promise recovery of lawfully deleted data.
